For any of you real estate investors, what tools or sources did you learn from when getting started. Can’t find a mentor currently so want to find some highly recommended books or videos. If focused on the tri-state area (NY, NJ, Long Island mainly) that would be even better. My hope is to buy and rent out a apartment while also owning a house and house hacking that by renting part of it out. Trying to understand all the steps, traps, and how to find if it’s a good investment.
Bigger Pockets, YouTube, Instagram, books, etc. - there’s a huge amount of online resources to help with this! There’s also lots of people that are glad to sell you their education or learning, but you should be able to learn enough from the free (or relatively cheap) resources to make it work.
Here’s a good list of real estate investing books: https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbesrealestatecouncil/2019/11/04/15-essential-books-to-read-before-starting-in-real-estate/
My network of friends has real estate investors who started coaching others, check out Zen Coast University
I live in NYC. I rent in Manhattan and buy in GA and AL to rent out. The cash return is much better this way.
I ask the real estate agent for recommendations. If I buy on Roofstock, they list preferred management companies, and sometimes the current property manager is one of their preferred ones. None of my investment properties I currently own are close to me. I shop online and crunch numbers and facts.
