I am generally uncomfortable when I’m around my mother-in-law’s husband.

While he is overall a decent guy, his anger issues, yelling at his wife for the slightest issue, and insulting nature makes me uncomfortable and triggers my own anger due to his blatant disrespect for just about everyone around him.

My mother-in-law says he’s worked on things, but it’s been 10 years of this and I’m not sure I want such behavior around my wife and our kids since we’re trying to conceive soon (cont).

Trying to get some data points for potential negotiations, what kind of signing bonuses is NYC BigLaw offering right now in this lateral craze to senior associates in M&A support specialist groups with typical high demand right now. Anyone's firms giving them retention bonuses to stay?

When and how do you push back on people senior to you? Fifth year dealing with supersenior associate (11th year) who completely lacks good judgment & common sense. One of those super smart but impractical types. As just one example, he recently called me to tell me to call someone who’s on vacation and ask them to send a calendar invite. I offered to send myself but apparently that wouldn’t work (presumably because it would be efficient & make sense.) At what point (and how) do I Just Say No?

I’ve been having a bit of trouble working with one partner at a new firm. There are definitely things I can/need to work on for improvement, but I’ve been practicing for four years and have had no trouble with other partners/peers before. This partner sent an email to me with bills for one client of his/hers I worked on and now looped in a practice management person to have a ‘management call’ (prob to talk about billing less..) Should I be looking for other opportunities?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

I recently moved from litigation to transactional and am struggling to reach billable targets. In litigation it was no problem hitting 1800+ hours but don’t see how I’m going to come anywhere close to that in a transactional role.

I’m mostly sitting around all day waiting for work that doesn’t take long to complete (though at my desk for 10-12 hours/day). Is this normal? Suggestions on how to keep busy other than asking for work and having good work product?

I’m a true night-owl that begins thinking clearly about 5 PM. I often send projects out after midnight. Early morning emails and calls are an adventure. Has anyone else had to work through this issue? Fight it or embrace it?

Worked in big law since this summer. Feedback is that my legal writing is first class, but that I’m severely sub standard when it comes to aptitude for work as a lawyer with paying clients.

I feel terrible, no self confidence and want to get out. Any alternative career suggestions?

How many of you biglaw associates are on your grind trying to recruit people to earn a big referral bonus? I’m treating it like a side gig. Ironic that my firm does not give associates any kind of origination credit. If they took the same philosophy with business development, I would direct my efforts there too.!

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

1st yr at a nyc v50 firm doing general transactional work. I know the lateral market for transactional lawyers is hot but not as hot for juniors. I just want a change of scenery because my current firm is bleeding good associates / not giving great training imo / and just seems small. Would lateralling this early feasible? I have had a lot of success in my position at my firm. Clients have been extremely open with their appreciation and desire to work with me. I have far exceeded my billing requirements by over 75-100 hours each month. What is the best way to seek a midstream raise? Also, what is a reasonable raise. Is asking for 15-20k ridiculous when I think I have earned it?
