Hand-me-downs are kind of my weakness. My uncle once gave me his vintage bandana-print silk scarf. Instead of saving it for fancy days, I’ve worn it as a belt, tied it around tote handles, and even framed it as wall art for a while. Repurposing heirlooms makes them feel like your statement instead of just a relic. For your leather jacker, you could totally dress it down for brunch or gallery hopping over a hoodie and sneakers, don’t save it only for “big” events.

Please be sure to learn how to take care of the leather. Or find someone with that experience.
Sounds like a great fall/winter piece based on your climate! What a cool thing to do!
I thrifted a gorgeous long black leather coat with a fur collar a few years ago. I started only wearing it over dresses to go out. But try to wear it more regularly if I don’t need more layers when it’s colder. It instantly makes me feel good wearing it so it would be a shame to forgo that feeling on any given day just because I’m not going out

Thrift and eBay and Poshmark are really the way to go for interesting clothes you can afford.
I bought handmade Japanese trench coat from the 90s that someone ordered but never picked up. Found it on eBay about 10 years ago. Synthetic black, asymmetrical big silver zipper, belted, and had a cool BUTTON in wool lining that must have used 100 buttons. I don’t get to wear it often enough. Original cost was about $2,000. Near been worn. I waited patiently and bought it for $280 (I think that’s right).
A trenchcoat?
Save it. You don’t have to wear it. If you have to think of where to wear it, it loses its sentimentality. If the time comes and it feels appropriate, there you go.
