My boss asked me to lead a big project that could be great for my career. But I'm wondering if they picked me because they trust me or just because I'm the one who always says yes when everyone else is swamped. How can I tell if I'm actually being given a real opportunity or just being used?

You can’t. Document EVERYTHING that you’re doing, complete the project, keep copies of everything; but otherwise do your best. If they betray you, you have the proof to be able to say they’re lying and if they don’t, then it never comes to that.

Does it matter either way? No matter what their reason is for picking you for the project, you can still decide for yourself if it would be a good option for you or not.

Doesn't matter. An opportunity is an opportunity. Take full advantage of it. And be proud of yourself for getting it in the first place - your boss is clearly impressed by your work, or they wouldn't have given you the chance in the first place.

It could be any number of reasons, including setting you up for failure, leading to a PIP and termination.

How well do you know your boss, and how well do you trust them? Are there any "red flags?"

If your boss is trustworthy and a good leader, they may be providing you with a genuine opportunity, which could lead to a promotion later.

Do NOT claim you are "colorblind" in the workplace. 1. DE&I knowledge is now a core leadership competency. Colorblind claims will earn you the reputation of being DEI-ignorant at best & racist at worst. 2. Colorblindness within the context of workplace diversity is an obvious lie. You do NOT want to be painted as an intellectually dishonest leader. 3. Colorblind claims signal that you lack the leadership skills & vocabulary to have key conversations. I will possibly be getting a machinist role through some contacts, and I have no experience in the field and I’m wondering what I could expect to make, when I look up average salaries for a machinist position I see around 65k but that seems too good for my age and experience so I’m wondering what some others in the trade on here are making

How do I get a job as a Mechanical Engineer if I dont have experience?

I couldn’t get an internship while in school. I have a BS in ME and projects from school under my belt. I’ve also passed the FE exam. I’ve been mostly just doing CAD for a company for the last year by creating minimally dimensioned drawings and moving parts around in assemblies. I want to evolve in my career and be doing more. I worked so hard to earn my degree and I feel like I’m not even using it. But who will hire me?
