You can’t. Document EVERYTHING that you’re doing, complete the project, keep copies of everything; but otherwise do your best. If they betray you, you have the proof to be able to say they’re lying and if they don’t, then it never comes to that.

Does it matter either way? No matter what their reason is for picking you for the project, you can still decide for yourself if it would be a good option for you or not.

Doesn't matter. An opportunity is an opportunity. Take full advantage of it. And be proud of yourself for getting it in the first place - your boss is clearly impressed by your work, or they wouldn't have given you the chance in the first place.

It could be any number of reasons, including setting you up for failure, leading to a PIP and termination.
How well do you know your boss, and how well do you trust them? Are there any "red flags?"
If your boss is trustworthy and a good leader, they may be providing you with a genuine opportunity, which could lead to a promotion later.
