30% of gross income on rent makes no sense to me.. especially because % would be higher if your denominator is income after tax instead of gross income. Anyways, it’s personal choice after all.

Go to the New York City bowl and raise this question.
It comes down to so many factors (how close do you want to be for work? Is there a wfh situation - 3 days at work and 2 days at home? What do you prioritize? A night life or will you be working until the early morning hours on some projects?)
There are definitely cheaper places outside of Manhattan that may be more spacious and peaceful.. but you have to look for it.
I would stay away from NY, maybe live in jersey.
NY is overpriced, and from your previous rent I can sense that not only your rent is going higher but the rest of the expenses.
Try to get 30% of the cash for rent not the gross
