My husband and I are both freelance (in different fields) and through the N.Y. health exchange had a platinum plan (ie no deductible and 15-40$ copays) for $1700-something a month. When our son was born it went up to over $2400/mo. We’ve been torturing ourselves over one of ya not having staff jobs and planning to downgrade the plan to something less high. Just chiming in with those numbers because it shocks me how comparable it seems to be with staff insurance, depending on employer plans. But wow.
I would be paying $750 a month if it weren’t for my husband’s plan. Our family is only $200 a month for basically the same coverage. It’s wild.
My family’s plan for us (not an agency plan) is just over 3200/month. There’s no deductible but it’s outrageous. The same plan cost just over 1000 about 3 years ago. These aren’t even PPO plans cause in NYC they opted to stop offering PPOs cause they didn’t want to make one for the exchange. The last 15 years of health insurance have been an insane thing to watch and worse to live through. I remember my husband being on a 440 a month PPO that was expensive back then (we weren’t married yet) and I was on a self insured HMO for like 250?
We need the plan we have but it’s insane.
OP what you’re saying sounds so intentional and potentially illegal that I don’t even know what to say. To change policy to avoid taking care of your needs is just disgusting, particularly because it’s being done so shadily. I’m sorry you’re going through this. But really I’m sorry our health care system functions this way that we are all here having these discussions at all.
Wishing everyone here health.

Just wait until they can deny coverage for preexisting conditions.

They’ve been doing that for a lot of people it’s just now catching up to full time employed folks ...
