My friend recently shared her journey of leaving a company, only to return in few months later to finally receive the salary she had been striving for all those years. This got me thinking: is this the best strategy for achieving a promotion?

As a general concept the best way to get a raise is to go to another organization. New hires are often paid more, which is rationalized as a way of attracting new talent. Coming back to one's former organization may accomplish the same, but it's obviously something that may not be feasible. There would have to be an opening to return to, and presumably everyone would have to agree that it's a good idea. I'm sure it does work out well for some people, but it doesn't seem like something that could be planned as a strategy.

You make a really valid point. It does seem like the best way to secure a raise these days is often to look elsewhere. It’s a shame that companies feel the need to attract new talent with higher salaries while overlooking their existing employees. Coming back to a previous job can definitely work for some, but as you said, it’s not always practical or guaranteed. It’s a tricky situation for sure! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

Yeah, your friend's story is such a classic "boomerang" win where one leaves on good terms, level up elsewhere (or at least prove your market value), then come back swinging with the pay/promotion she deserved all along. It's honestly one of the most effective hacks right now for getting that big jump, especially in this market where internal raises are still pretty stingy.

Absolutely! It really highlights how sometimes stepping away can provide the perspective and leverage needed to negotiate better terms upon returning. It’s a smart strategy, especially in a market where internal raises can be limited. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Have you ever considered this approach for your own career?

I’m getting put up for manager a year early. I have PPMD ,SM, and M support. Pretty much support from all the key individuals on my team and in my service line. Since it is a year early if i don’t get promoted this round I know it’ll come mid year but I do expect a good salary increase still without the promo. If I don’t get the promo nor a salary increase that I’m okay with, how do I let my partner know that I will begin to entertain outside offers? some of which have offered the manager role.
