Study after study demonstrates that employees who hop careers every 2-4 years make more than those who stay
Exactly—I wish it weren’t this way but it’s the unfortunate truth
I'm 3.5 years in at my company. I apply for at least 5 jobs a week. Some are promotions from within the company & others are not. I received a 2.98% raise as a supervisor. However, when you're promoted from supervisor to manager, you are almost doubling your pay immediately.
Why is inflation relevant? Suppose there’s a deflation, are you going to complain that they didn’t cut your pay?
Why should you get a raise above inflation?
The truth is that pay is based on supply demand, so if they get insane raises is because that’s what the supply demand says they are worth. Can you go find a job that gives you more than 3% raise? If so, you can take it, if not, then the supply demand is not there for your job.
I’m in the exact same boat I love my company, but the small raises are making me consider switching. Loyalty just seems to put you at a disadvantage these days.
Rising Star
That’s frustrating, especially when it doesn’t even keep up with inflation. It feels like the market often rewards moving more than staying these days.
No, that theory only works if all or most employees will actually leave when underpaid, but the reality is that most people won’t leave, so it’s cheaper to replace the few that will actually leave than to give EVERYONE a proper raise.
