As a manager, I say this to my staff and mean it. Oftentimes my days are filled with meetings and putting out fires. I have some quiet time at the end of the day to run through emails, and it’s just getting things off my plate for my own sanity. I don’t expect nor want my staff to respond off-hours.
That said, when my own boss emails me after hours, I feel the need to respond, even though he tells me the same thing I tell my staff. Do as I say, not as I do…
One thing that helps me is I turned off notifications for outlook, Teams, etc on my phone and moved those apps to the last page on my phone. I have to scroll over to look at them and check notifications. Then I’m consciously checking work after hours, but it’s enough to give me pause sometimes. But then the choice is mine to check something vs getting a notification about it and feeling like I have to stop what I’m doing to respond.
Great advice!! Thanks for sharing.

I’d probably take her at her word unless she’s directly expecting quick responses after hours. Some managers work odd hours for their own schedule, but that doesn’t always mean they expect the team to do the same. I’d just avoid replying after hours unless it’s truly urgent, so you don’t accidentally set that expectation for yourself.
Great point!! Thanks for sharing. I didn’t think about it like this
I agree with Ops Executive 1. I often work outside business hours for various reasons and that’s my choice however I don’t expect or want my team to do the same. I do expect them to be on time, work 40 hours and not cut out at 4:59pm everyday.
Yessssss. Work 40 hours. Crazy concept apparently.

My boss works later bc it’s a time where no one can bother them. If they say not to work late, I’d assume they mean it.
My manager never wants me to work after business hours—but I do anyway.
This is mainly to catch-up on work and not be so far behind. I’m usually stuck at meetings or getting pulled aside for ad-hoc projects.
Work outside of business hours is usually for heads down work.
So true, thanks for sharing
I was that manager. Never expected people to work the crazy hours I put in. My work/life imbalance was on me not them.
I had a manager like that. I’d say bye to her on my way out the door!
I meant at 5pm each day! She stays late, I’m out!
