We've had a problem where ads in a flier appear with a QR code, and you scan the code to get a digital coupon, which you add to your online account. So of course some people clip the paper out of the flier and bring it into the store thinking that's the coupon. Having to explain to someone that what they clipped is something they have to scan with their phone and it's not really the coupon is always a wild adventure. I'd rather explain algebra to my neighbor's pit bull.
Yeah, trying to explain that online and in-store are two separate entities, and that online deals aren't offered in-store has always been, and remains, one of the worst parts of this job.
The abandoned cart hack. One of my friends works in marketing and told me never to purchase anything immediately. Instead, fill your cart with more items than you plan on purchasing, give them your email, and then don't proceed with checkout. Most companies will send a discount code email after a day or two, and some will give a bigger discount if you have over $100 in your cart. Once they send the discount, just remove whatever you didn't want to buy and check out using the code!
Ooh, I like that. I have "accidently" done that (left stuff whilst thinking about it), and gotten coupons. I also have started check out and then gone to leave to see what I get, but overspending and then waiting for a code? Yeah, I will be doing this from now on.
