I live in SD and love it, best place I've ever lived :) it's a county of ~8 million so there are going to be a ton of things to do. Balboa Park + The SD Zoo + The Safari Park is amazing. Food is great, all sorts of various ethnic cuisine (and as mentioned before, it's less than 2.5 hours to LA). You're a flight away from Hawaii and other get aways (and only a drive away from Mexico). It does require a car and the want and motivation to take some time to get to the best of what SD has to offer. Again, I highly recommend SD as a place to live :)
Are you white and do you collectively make more than 350k?
Just moved to SD from NYC. Yes there’s a lack of diversity in the La Jolla and north county areas, nothing is ever open late, and the museums are horrible... the beautiful weather is worth it though. We’ve learned to appreciate the beach too. Climate risk is moderate to high depending on where you live but still better than east coast weather hazards by far. Think your kids will enjoy it overall (how can they not?!)
American born East Asian, not sure about our income as I may downshift or retire. To be clear though I’m not asking about whether we can afford it. More about the culture
It’s kind of part of the answer. Sd to me is a hub of super rich retire people (mostly white).
So you would want to think- can I provide my fam with best education and best experiences here? Will they have company ? Will I have friend circle?
Next how much do you really club? For me San Diego is a good enough night scene as I’m done with all club hopping in my 20s.
Also weather is amazing in case you like driving and doing hikes as a family.
Exactly what I was thinking. Great questions. And no we never club. I had to read it a few times just to understand what you were asking :) we do enjoy sitting outside and having some beers in the afternoon. Or going out to dinner and having some wine or cocktails.
I worked at UCSD for a while. There’s a large East Asian student population, but not sure about non-students. San Diego is my favorite city in the US (and I’ve lived all over). Way better than LA in my opinion Agree that there’s more diversity in south county.
I am concerned about a lack of diversity, good food, things to do, climate risk (fires?). Anyone have any thoughts on sd? I know they have a cool museum campus and good beer. But what else should I know? It’s my wife and 2 kids in middle school
Not sure if this makes a difference but SD isn’t too too far from LA, in case living closer to LA and commuting is an option
It’s an interesting point. From Irvine to UCSD is about an hour. What do you think of Orange County?
If I were a kid I would probably love growing up in San Diego. And I think the quality of life for family oriented adults can be very good.
Thanks for the confidence to explore this more. My wife will be working at UCSD. What are some good areas to live? We want to do public schools. And I imagine a neighborhood where there is a community pool and the kids ride their bikes to their friends houses
We moved from NYC to San Diego. Big culture difference and there are pros and cons.
Pros: the obvious one is weather. If you love the outdoors and the beach, can’t beat SD. It’s great for kids to get outside and play, lots of great safe neighborhoods and good school districts. We’re in Carmel Valley in north county, fantastic public schools. Everything is a 20 minute drive so super convenient. Traffic isn’t too bad especially compared to LA. My commute is 15 minutes. If you live downtown and commit north it can be longer, but nothing like east coast commutes.
Cons: culture. Food. Diversity. It’s still a city so sure, you’ll find some gems (the symphony here is actually surprisingly good. La Jolla playhouse has some good stuff, there are a couple restaurants we love) but compared to NY it’s not even in the same league. Food - if you love fish tacos and craft beer, great. If you’re looking for more innovative or exotic cuisines, go to LA. I miss the Chinese food in queens something fierce. Also, coming from NY I was surprised how conservative San Diego is. Yes it’s in Cali but it’s a lot of military and old money, and in 2016 there were trump signs in my neighborhood. That threw me a bit, not sure if it matters to you
Overall, it works for where I am in life right now. We have a 2 year old and one more on the way. As the kids get a bit older, we will move back east to be closer to family and expose them to more art and culture.
Orange County is...um... closer to LA? That’s the only pro I can think of. It’s just a soulless uber wealthy suburb. Big houses and plastic surgery. Certainly comfortable living if you can afford it but I would be reluctant to raise my kids in that environment.
Grew up in San Diego ~18 years
I’d say it’s a great place to raise a family. Food is amazing especially if you like Mexican. Never really felt the climate risk but I also lived further southwest (Mission Beach area). Never saw diversity as a problem really but like I said I didn’t live in La Jolla. Not sure why PWC1 is against San Diego. Looking back I think I could not have grown up in a better city
My buddy Jack moved out there to be a Chef.. he’s doing great, has two beautiful roommates a quirky landlord and crazy Best friend.
