Thoughts on a Omega De Ville Prestige as a first luxury watch? Would be ~$7.5K USD at retail. Some friends have said great things about Omega as a starter, whereas others say it’s not worth it over a Rolex Oyster Perpetual (which would be similar in cost).
I personally love how clean the design is, the use of gold, and the thinner band as it links the watch … find the Rolex band design to be too chunky.

But it depends on if “break the bank” means a budget of under $5000 or under $1000.

I own a Patek and a classic Rolex. But I love Omega’s so I’d look there. But hard to tell what your budget it.
This is like saying you want to buy your first house but you did not provide a budget.
The price tiers are generally: below $1000, $1000-$5000, $5000-$10000, and $10000++
You’re probably looking at stainless steel models and below $10000. Can you narrow down the budget range and we can help nominate some brands/models.
If you’re totally new to owning one, I would really recommend buying a 2nd hand watch which gives you the freedom to “change your mind” or “try something different” later down the road.
Now you have the budget narrowed down, i would go explore what type of style you’d like:
1. Diver
2. Dress
3. Sports
4. Chronograph
5. GMT or dual time watches
After you’ve narrowed it down, either watch a YouTube video or go to a multi brand retailer (AD) and try many watches/brands. Of course, only try the ones that catches your eyes :)
As for actual watches:
I would personally recommend IWC Mark XX on a bracelet but do that only after you’ve tried a few (Tudor, longines, zenith, nomos, breitling). You will see that understated watch has so much to offer when compared to the rest… and the comfort of that bracelet is unmatched at that price level.
Omega speedmaster is a classic with a good bracelet as well but not as good as IWC. However, it is slightly out of your budget and the cheapest model is hesalite crystal without automatic winding.
If you go 2nd hand, you will get a lot more options and at this point, you might be able to score an older speedmaster professional.
