Not sure if this is the right bowl for this. I am having hard time transitioning from working at ad agencies to work in-house. I thought I could bring some expertise and graphic sophistication from spending many years at design and advertising shops. But I am finding that my marketing team is cut in their ways and reluctant to embrace even small changes. How do I let go? Anyone with similar experiences? This kind of sucks.

It’s the nature of the beast and why I left brand side. Though I loved the money and work life balance, I couldn’t take the politics or resistance to evolve. It’s for those 2 reasons companies will never match agencies in quality of work or competency of ideas. They require an abdication of individual thought in favor of swimming in their Kool-Aid.

No worries OP. I hope you find it easier to settle in. It’s definitely a culture shock for a number of reasons but you’ll definitely be happier if you channel your creativity towards furthering yourself, rather than a client.

It’s amazing how we’re brainwashed into spending so much of our time, energy, and careers striving to make money for those who would toss us at the first sign of a possible profit loss. It took me a long time to realize this. Going brand side buys you the freedom to pursue your own personal and / or economic goals; and that’s why I’m trying to go back.

I am running into the same issue. I am having two meetings this week to sell the radical idea of making a brief and a strategy before starting on a project. It’s really hard when nobody listens

This was my choice. I really wanted a change of pace, and since I’m getting older the agency world wasn’t the best fit anymore. But I thought these guys at the marketing team had hired me because I could bring some expertise to the design. In reality it’s more like “ keep doing whatever we have been doing and don’t change things too much”. I am just replacing somebody who left.

I left agency life for better work/life balance on client side, but the rigid process and politics and resistance to change were suffocating. I left after 18 months and returned to the ad side and I’m so happy I did. I understand that every company is different, so maybe my client side experience was just a case of being a bad fit. I am glad I gave it a shot though, and perhaps those 18 months will help guide me to a position I like more if I ever go client side again.

I was hired at my gig to bring change to the brand team and hit the same brick wall. I am also old so decided to go client side for that reason. I don't regret it but only because agency world is no longer kind to a 60 year old.

I worked in-house for three years. Experienced the same thing. It’s all performance marketing. There is no strategy.

Starting to think about making the switch from agency to brand side. Any tips from strategists who have already made the jump? And is there a level at which it makes the most sense (i.e. should I wait until I make Director and then make the switch, or does it not really matter)?

Just heard my H1B petition was approved. Visa will be valid starting Oct 1, 2021. I am also scheduled to get promoted in October (unsure of which date exactly). Hypothetically, if I get promoted from Account Coordinator to Account Manager I on Oct 5, after my H1B kicks in on Oct 1, how would this work logistically? Planning on going back to home country and also getting the visa issuance in Dec. Similar experience, anyone? Appreciate your input.
