On an engagement causing a commute of 3-4 hours a day. Is this normal? How to deal? Can’t move..

I use the mileage reimbursement to subsidize a hotel room near the client when that shit happens to me. Worth every penny for my sanity and the extra sleep.

Everybody saying that OP should “suck it up” - who hurt you guys? In what world is it reasonable to demand 3-4 hours of lost time in a car everyday? Yeah I’m sure you could listen to audiobooks or whatever but that’s far from being productive. OP - definitely explain the situation to your manager and partner, but don’t put added pressure on yourself of also having a child while you’re clearly in a tough position career wise. There is probably someone with an easier commute who can get staffed, and if there isn’t - there’s probably reason to ask for a hotel room.

I’m in New York, based out of Long Island. If I’m on an NYC client, it’s a a 2 hour commute both ways. No hotel. Is what it is.

like

Can you listen to cpa audio books in the car to “study” during that time?

like

which market are you in? that’s insane... if it’s over 80 miles, you could usually get a hotel

like

Depends where you live. In some markets, anything more than an hour or so is crazy. In others, 2 hours is the norm. Either way, you can try and ask for a switch but you might be better off with the devil you know.

like

I feel like I am wining. No more from me. I’ll find a way.

like

Definitely tough, but at least you don't pick vegetables in a field for 10 hours a day. It could always be worse. What do you do when driving?

like

Work with your team to see if you can come in later and leave later if that avoids some rush hour traffic.

like

Wow, being 35 miles away from your home office to start is crazy. Best of luck to you.

Where you are living is effectively tripling your commute compared to someone living near the office. It sucks that you’re in this position, but it’s where you live that is making the commute so excessive in this case. It still sucks, and I feel bad for you, but this isn’t your firm being unreasonable, and your wife needs to realize that.

like

I have a two hour commute to my office. And I have a toddler. You just get used to it. Maybe ask if you can work from home once a week? I find that helps enormously.

like

It’s reasonable in a world where you choose to live 35 miles from work in a city with shitty traffic

like

Where is your home office? It might be worth having a conversation with whoever does the scheduling. When I was at EY working at 5x2, I lived in jersey and they kept putting me in clients in west Chester and having people make the commute from NY into NJ. The scheduler didn’t even know where I live because apparently EY doesn’t always share that with them

like

3-4 hour daily commutes are pretty standard for people commuting to Manhattan from CT, NJ, PA. Was more bearable when metro north had bar cars.

funnylike

Thanks. I’m trying to explain to my wife that it is what it is. She doesn’t believe me. This should affirm my declaration.

like

In south. Anything over 1.5 hours we get to decide if we want hotel. Technically anything over 1 hour is eligible for hotel but I set my min at 1.5

like

I suggest asking your team to get a hotel room. Whatever you get reimbursed with all that mileage should cover it. and I suggest you wait to have children after you’re done your cpa and are off this engagement. Sounds like you have enough going on without that stress

like

@EY OP - talk to someone about it... start with your CA. If he or she doesnt give a shit, talk to your partner. I’m sure they can find someone who lives on the other side of town.

If nothing works out and this engagement is still going to be a while, move somewhere else... life is too short to be unhappy in a job or project, especially if it’s affecting important areas of your life. Keep us posted!

like

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to leave public accounting for an I distrust job near your home. You’ll have time to study for CPA and work on that first baby.

like

I've been in the same situation before... it's the worst! I raised concerns to the partner and she said there was no budget for a hotel so suck it up. Next time I'm going to insist that it's required... Can't do that again

Any superb restaurant recommendations in vail? My wife and I will be celebrating our 10 year anniversary and we just had our first child. Since most dinners these days entail standing over our kitchen island, want to go all out on the food. We already have Matsuhisa and Mt. Standard lined up, curious to hear about any others!

My routine:
AM: Wash with Ordinary squalane cleanser, Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid serum, Biotherm Glow serum, Summer Friday eye cream, Cerave moisturizing lotion with SPF, CBD A+ squalane oil. PM: Double wash with Ordinary squalane cleanser and Cerave cream to foam face wash, Ordinary hyaluronic acid serum, Ordinary 1% Retinol in squalane, Cerave eye cream, Cerave moisturizing cream. Aside from a light lip tint, I don’t wear makeup.

Hi! Completely new to this and been blessed with clear skin all my life. Starting to worry about preventing wrinkles, staying moisturized (my skin skews dry), reducing pore size, & looking less tired/more glowing. I want to create a structured, easy, fast daily routine.
Currently I use cerave hydrating facial cleanser when I remember, & sometimes The Ordinary hylauronic acid and retinol.
Recs for facial moisturizers, serums, toner, and SPF that goes on clear?
Thank you skincare lovers!

Which offer should I accept? Currently staff 2 at big 4 in Tax with CPA license. I want to leave tax ASAP. Both are public companies +1B in revenue and same salary. Offer 1 - staff revenue accountant so reading contracts, speaking with the sales team and legal team, a lot of work at the end of the months to close books and reconcile transactions to make sure we are ASC 606 compliant. This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.
