On an engagement causing a commute of 3-4 hours a day. Is this normal? How to deal? Can’t move..

I use the mileage reimbursement to subsidize a hotel room near the client when that shit happens to me. Worth every penny for my sanity and the extra sleep.

Everybody saying that OP should “suck it up” - who hurt you guys? In what world is it reasonable to demand 3-4 hours of lost time in a car everyday? Yeah I’m sure you could listen to audiobooks or whatever but that’s far from being productive. OP - definitely explain the situation to your manager and partner, but don’t put added pressure on yourself of also having a child while you’re clearly in a tough position career wise. There is probably someone with an easier commute who can get staffed, and if there isn’t - there’s probably reason to ask for a hotel room.

I have a long commute to my client and I listened to the Becker lectures while driving when I was studying for the exams. Even though it was really boring, it helped a lot!

like

talk to the manager on the engagement, ive known a lot of people that have been rotated off projects once the team realizes what the commute is. experience management is the worst at staffing sometimes bc they dont think about practicality of the placement

I would ask the engagement manager about the possibility of getting a hotel. I was on an engagement that required a 2.5 hour drive during busy season with crazy hours. But it was only 70 miles away which was below the “100 mile” minimum to get a hotel, so I never asked. It wasn’t till the last day of the engagement that the manager told me he would have approved a hotel room if I had told him I was driving that far. So there’s no harm in asking, more harm if you don’t

like

Oh dude I had to do it everyday for 2 years.. I quit the firm eventually because the commute (among other things) got to me

like

EY OP I had to go from Jersey City to Stamford, CT for an engagement and they paid for the hotel for the week.

It really sucks that the travel policy doesn't allow us to charge the excess travel time (above normal daily commute to the EY office) to the Client code. My recollection is that years ago this was actually allowed and they only recently changed the policy so that we need to eat the extra commute time. Plus we must make an effort to travel after 5:30pm when traveling to out-of-town assignments/training (which makes the travel non-reported in GT&E). Screw that. I almost always deliberately schedule my out of town travel to be within regular business hours. I'm not losing those hours (albeit I only get to dump them in that silly "out of town excess travel Authorized Project code). The Firms need to be more reasonable and give us actual credit for the excess commuting we do. And I live in the NYC area. I signed up for better or for worse to a solid 1 hour commute to the office each way. I did NOT sign up for a 90 minute or 2 hour commute to get to a client 30-45 minutes BEYOND the office. So to those of you who talk big about sucking it up - I got something you can suck on alright.

My client is like 30 miles from my home, and I get hotels whenever I don't feel like driving

like

It’s not ideal but it’s our industry. At least it’s temporary, some people do it every single day. At least we have a light at the end of the tunnel.

The engagement is on the opposite side of my home office. I’m about 35 miles from my home office. The engagement is another 20 miles past that. While it is 110 miles a day. It’s not really extending my “normal commute” enough. The real problem is time, which I don’t think is reimbursed. After passing my home office, it’s a lazy river of traffic for 30-45 minutes extra.

I can suck it up for now. But it’s really slowing my studies down for the CPA, and making it hard to get proper sleep, exercise, and nutrition. Not to mention my wife wanting children. I have thought about going to a gym closer to the engagement, meal prepping on Sunday’s. But I can’t find a way to ensure time for quality sleep and the exam and my wife.

I would look at the commute policy, cause I know a staff we have commuted from BK to NJ and it was over 50 or 60 miles and some crazy commuting time and now gets a hotel. I think the deal w him was that he wouldn't get reimbursed mileage or something like. Would definitely look into though

I would ask for a hotel room or work remotely, no way I would ever commute that far.

PwC4 - firm policy is if you need to leave before 6:30am to make it to work on time, you may get a room. I’m not aware of any 100 mile standard

@EY 4 There were comments along those lines before OP mentioned his living situation.

I can’t erase that knowledge from my memory

Car? Public Transport? East/West coast? Some areas have really bad commutes. NYC is certainly one of them. So, would you mind sharing your start and end point?

Pwc5 I’m 99% sure it’s 6 AM

Ive commuted daily to a client site with 60+ miles each way... it was bad.. but do search for an audio lecture if you want to study for cpa while driving! It does help!

I was about to refer to that policy...when did it change? It was anything over the greater of your normal commute or one hour each way was charged to the client code...

And is the variable paid fully usually? Thanks in advance for your insights.
