On this platform, I’ve noticed many discussions surrounding expectations on billable hours, along with frustration from various attorneys regarding the workload. For civil litigation attorneys, what is considered a reasonable caseload for 7-10 year associate to handle? That may be difficult to answer because every case is different based on the client/s, complexity, court, staffing resources, and other. What is considered reasonable for small litigation compared to complex litigation matters?

Very hard to answer, but I do business litigation - both plaintiff and defense, no insurance defense work.

I generally have 3-4 large files in suit (millions), 5-10 smaller files in suit (between 25-200k in dispute) and then 10 or so disputes not in suit (trading demand letters etc.).

I usually bill around 1900 a year

That’s great that you have the assistance you need for the workload. It is not like that for every law firm. Thank you for responding!

So look, not trying to be a dick here, but legit, why do people who live in nyc always give off the vibe that they’re so proud of themselves? Like they’ve accomplishing something just by being there. I’ve lived in huge American cities before but never felt compelled to aggressively pat myself on the back just for signing an overpriced lease. It’s a great place and all, don’t get me wrong, no need to get defensive, but come oooooon, really? Just curios that’s all :)

What do you do when you feel the goalpost has been/is being moved re: billable requirements? Like there's a spoken vs unspoken? I chose this job based on billables vs salary and what I'm being told I'm expected to do now is 20-30% (at least) > than what was initially agreed upon. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.
