One rule I have is, if the price goes DOWN, sticker it so that they can see the original price and the new, reduced price. If the price goes UP, remove all previous stickers. Even when well covered, or blacked out, I have had people go home, steam off the stickers, then come back to complain about it being $1 cheaper 8 years ago. ;)
Even when everyone follows that rule, we still run into store transfers or product from the warehouse with horrible price management, and having to deal with complaints about that.
My favourite is when something was returned by another retailer (no offence, but I swear that Walmart is the only retailer that gets away with not removing store stickers before returning product to suppliers) and sent to us with that retailer's stickers, and customers must forget where they are shopping, because they think we should charge the other retailer's pricing. Or some used collectable with an obvious garage sale sticker (again, sent that way from the warehouse) that someone wants to argue about.
And yes, WE should be better about catching that and removing these wayward stickers, but like I said, they often come from the warehouse, and my boss doesn't want us to spend too much time policing the product from the warehouse.

Omg yes. people would literally bring in stuff with stickers from a totally different store or years ago and argue the price like we personally raised it on them. You try explaining warehouse transfers without sounding like you’re making it up
That's pretty next-level. But I applaud her for her wishful thinking and optimism! I've had people come to my register with items that couldn't possibly be as low as they were expecting. Like, a printer that was left in the snack aisle and they thought it was $1.99 because it was sitting on the floor next to the label for sunflower seeds or something. And they wanted me to honor the price because *they* thought it was the price. I mean, I wish I could do that lol. But I also don't want to get fired so they can get a basically free printer.

Honestly, the way people assume price tags just float to items is wild.
I’m so glad she eventually calmed down, but wow, that’s some serious mental gymnastics. I once had someone insist their expired coupon “should still count because it was only expired in spirit.” Like… what does that even mean?!

Hahah that’s hilarious. “Expired in spirit” is a new one! 💀
Haha, that’s wild! Some customers have the most creative interpretations of store policies. I’ve definitely had those moments where I just had to pause and think, ‘Is this really happening?’ Retail is full of surprises!
