I have seen companies do this as a way to avoid the bad press from a mass layoff. If they force people back to the office who are used to working remote, the company knows that some of those people are just going to quit.
Pro
If their goal is really to make people quit, then it’s a calculated move. But honestly, if the same work can be done remotely, there’s no real reason to force people back into the office.

Remote work is, just like more respectful customers, one of the Covid changes that is being fought tooth and nail.
And it's funny, because literally EVERY study shows workers are happier AND more productive from home, overall. And it saves the company so much money. But, especially anyone tied into a long term commercial lease, they don't want empty office space that they are paying for.
So you're going from fully remote to fully in office? That's brutal. I feel like most companies have understood that some flexibility is necessary to keep everyone happy, and that's why hybrid models are so popular. Going fully in-office all at once seems really harsh. I bet you'll have some turnover
Pro
Honestly, it felt brutal , like a bomb dropped out of nowhere, with no prior notice or discussion. It caught everyone off guard.
I don't like it either. I am so accustomed to working remotely. I love the flexibility of it. But, when my company decided to do that, it only lasted 3 weeks because it was too many complaints about it. So, I hope it happens to you.
Pro
I really hope the same happens with our company too because people are seriously frustrated right now. Something needs to change.
That's not uncommon, there really seems to be a trend against remote work. You've had prominent business leaders railing against it, and over time that has an effect. The reality is that a lot of bosses just want people where they can see them. All the talk about remote work being the way of the future seems to have faded out in the past year or so.
I've always worked in store, so this is all foreign to me. But it sounds like a crummy move on your company's part. I don't see the need for going back to the office when remote has clearly worked fine for y'all in the past.

I honestly don’t know who comes up with these changes. Why mess with people’s lives when they’re already delivering what’s expected? It just feels unnecessary and unfair.
Yeah, it’s hard not to feel like trust is being pulled back. If productivity hasn’t dropped, what’s the real reason? Control? Optics? Some folks thrive in the office, sure—but forcing everyone in when remote was working just fine feels like fixing something that wasn’t broken.
