Overheard someone talk about someone who is “quiet” like it’s an issue. Who gives a shit? Do they do their job? Are they talented? Are they nice?

I used to get feedback like this all the time. It was really hard for me when I first moved to the US and there was one large digital agency where I worked where everyone loved the sound of their own voices.

It’s not an easy industry for introverts

likehelpful

It’s an industry full of blowhards who consider all noise from their mouthes as productive contribution and insight. Those of us who speak an average amount and only when we have something valuable to contribute are considered quiet.

Omg so much!

WHAT ARE THEY HIDING

likefunnyuplifting

Pain CD1. Pain.

likefunnyhelpful

I hate this feedback. “I need you to speak up.” Uhm I will when I have something poignant and thoughtful to say, not just to speak and satisfy your own need to hear my voice. And I definitely won’t be some one who talks just so they can feel important.

like

Ugh every damn day. Most meetings involve 4 people regurgitating the same thing 1 person said for an hour. I hate that. I speak when necessary. Short and concise.

like

Introvert here. It sucks. The favorable performance I have driven for clients has kept me employed. Me being reserved and quiet has kept me from getting promoted. 🙃

like

Lmao. This and “why aren’t you more cheerful” are always on my annual reviews.

likefunnyuplifting

Because I’m thinking about how obnoxious some of you all are...

like

Plenty of hot air creating morons have said that about me. I speak to add value to a conversation, not talk a load of bollocks that wastes everybody’s time.

The irony about this is that it’s seen as ok to say a person is too quiet, but offensive to say that so and so is too loud, or talks too much.

likesmart

Exactly.

I moved away from US and am so happy there are fellow introverts like me leading accounts. There are way more valid reasons to judge people’s competencies !

like

Shouldn’t those things matter instead of their ability to please your ear drums with bs small talk?

like

“Nice” shouldn’t matter either. Are they valuable to the agency?

like

Sounds like 72& has nice people! Still stuck on the antiquated Be-A-Jerk-Like-Jobs approach huh?

like

Blowhards aren’t the problem. It’s the blowhards, that don’t know they’re blowhards, is. In a world full of posting your life publicly, people still lack self awareness like we’re in the stone ages.

like

Sometimes you can let a conversation breathe without having to get your specific thoughts in the middle. It’s good to hear what others have to say. Being quiet can also mean you want to help others grow.

like

Wow, somebody at an agency who does more listening than talking. I’m sure they don’t know what to make of such an alien.

like

Quiet can definitely be an issue. First step of doing the job is getting buy-in, and that often requires advocating for yourself/your approach.

like

Anyone struggling with advocating for their pov needs an ally in the room the first few times, or it's difficult to learn this skill. If you want someone to learn, be that support for them and show them how - don't tell them to change and expect them to figure it out.

like

It would be really helpful if people start speaking up at work when people say things like this. These people need to know it is not ok to say that.

like

I’ve gotten this talk before. Was given a glowing review on the caliber of my work and it was followed up with a “but you’re too quiet sometimes...” and was told if I work on that issue maybe I’ll get a raise next time. So I guess good workers are not as important as loud workers?

likefunny

This is the entirely wrong way of taking that feedback...

Shhhhh...you’re being too loud.

If you’re quiet when you’re doing your work and in social settings, more power to you, but I’ll give someone this feedback all day long (and loudly) if they sat on a client call or brainstorm for an hour + and didn’t contribute anything. I think this “quiet” feedback quite often gets confused with what the reviewer really means - don’t be timid or aloof in meetings where group discussion is expected or required.

Do you apply those same standards to those who speak to fill the void, or just say something in order to sound like they’re contributing, whilst not adding any real value to the call?
There really isn’t any difference between the two.

For those in international tax planning, curious what you all think about the future in light of Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 (on top of beps measures like anti-hybrid rules, interest deduction limitations, etc.). Short term I assume lots of planning work but curious on post-implementation
