Just me and SVP’s left in meeting. They’re talking about the planner’s outfit. It’s “whorish.” I’m silent. One notices. “You can’t say anything because you’re a guy,” she laughs. I leave.

Sorry, but failing to put a stop to this shit is the same as silently condoning it. Stand up for your colleague — or at the very least, stand up for appropriate behavior in the workplace.

likeuplifting

@SAD1 it is harassment and falls fully under creating a hostile work environment. You’re either being sarcastic or a lawsuit waiting to happen.

@BBDO2 it was middling for agency norms. Super jelly of the bod but likely also the level of work being done. Very threatening!

Smart to leave.

Agree. A “Hey...That’s not ok.” or “ hey guys, that’s not cool” are my standard back pocket phrases for this sort of thing with peers or people more Sr than me.

But OP just leaving probably was right choice in this situation.

You guy, you.

The fact that she said that shows that she knows it was inappropriate. Not saying anything was the right thing to do. But it also shows how it is often women who judge other women harshly. How does the saying go? Women don’t dress to impress men but to impress other women.

All the females/males that were complaining at OP, please illuminate us on what OP should have done, and PLEASE keep in mind he is a MAN, not a WOMAN. A single act of bravery will not change the industry. OP is empowering his team and most of you overlooked that and kept pointing fingers (GOOD JOB!...). Want a fucking change? Start checking your own team’s behaviour. A single act of bravery in this industry won’t change a god damn thing. We’re not in a fantasy world or a tv show, it is real life and humans will not hesitate to retaliate. I love hopes and dreams, but you know, being aware of your surroundings is a key skill to have :)

Just my opinion, the use of the word “whorish” made it about the person or at least their image, and not just the outfit. I think OP did the right thing in a difficult sitch. Catty people have been and will continue to be around forever. Their remarks reflect more about them than the planner they directed their remarks about. In moments like this, you get to see how people earn reputations. It’ll catch up with them eventually. I also wonder if they were testing OP to see if he wanted to be a “member of their catty club” so good move in not latching onto the bait.

like

It was totally about the person when a reference to "whore" is made in any variation - one of the most offensive and popular ways to denigrate and put women down

You did good, OP.

Please describe the outfit so we can decide for ourselves.

When I was a young planner, I had an interview at an agency in LA. The woman who interviewed me told my recruiter they were passing on me because I was dressed sluttily. I had been wearing a black pant suit. It covered all of me. But it was form fitting and my form was... well kind of like Jessica Rabbit.

These kinds of comments aren’t just catty. They can stall a woman’s career. They can trash her self esteem. They can make her hate her body. I am glad we are not putting up with this shit anymore.

For my own sake though, I wish this reckoning had come sooner.

likehelpful

I think you did the right thing and there’s no need to blow this kind of thing out of proportion.

It’s a catty comment for sure but so long as it was only about the outfit and not the person, then it’s not worth policing aggressively.

If I have accepted an offer from a UK company and they have initiated my visa process; meanwhile I get a better offer from another company which will also have to support my visa; does the second company then pick up the previous visa process on the same application number or it starts a fresh process with different application number.

What happens if there are two visa applications submitted on my name by two companies?
