Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

Other than general tax and estate planning, what are some practice areas can a Tax LL.M. be beneficial in? I’ve heard it can help you in M&A, but I’m curious if anyone has additional thoughts

Junior biglaw tax associate here. Considering an internal transfer vs lateral to NYC from a smaller market. Any firms in the v20 I should avoid/look into? I have pretty reasonable hours at my current firm and trying to avoid going to a sweatshop. Interested in international tax and hoping to avoid m&a. What is the best firm in NY for an associate interested in international tax planning (inbound and outbound), M&A, and transfer pricing?

For anyone who practices tax lit in the US Tax Court, what’s your experience with the independent office of appeals? They don’t seem quite that “independent” to me and so far, I’ve only had one appeals officer who seemed knowledgeable and nice. It’s been a real headache. Interested to hear other people’s experience.

I'm considering switching my practice from tax to exec comp so that I can work remotely indefinitely. If I dislike it, do you think it would be difficult to switch back? I'm a 4th year that works in biglaw.
