“Network, network, network” is unfortunately shorthand for “utilize the existing social capital and connections befitting your social class,” and if someone doesn’t already have an abundance of that, no amount of cold-connecting with strangers at events of any kind can compensate. It takes ages to build up a meaningful substitute.
I think those seem like superficial networking events, in my opinion the ones that work best occur naturally in a work or school environment. But I’m also not great at it so take it with a grain of salt
It’s more about utilizing your existing connections vs networking events/trying to connect with strangers. I’ve had recruiters remember me from past roles or applications and I’ve had former colleagues refer me to clients for jobs they couldn’t take on themselves. It’s all about people you already know. Aside from that, try to market yourself in an original way and if your work is good, that will speak for itself.
It only works if you have some type of clout. People have to want something from you first. That’s how it really goes if you don’t come in with connects.
Have a better book
Too many people go into networking events with the attitude of a tick, hoping to suck the blood out, where they can. When everyone comes in with this attitude, it's emotionally exhausting for everyone, and nobody gets fed. The best experiences I have had in these events, has been to meet without an agenda, and play matchmaker between people with matching wants/needs. Do that enough, and you gain a reputation for caring for others, and you go on to develop connections that last longer than the event itself.
