I don’t know what your relationship is like with the partners you work with, but it is entirely possible that they will be supportive of your move after you tell them. Even if you’re moving to another firm, your next move might be in-house or somewhere else they can tap for business. Even if they don’t care about you personally, it is in their economic interest to be good to you when you want to leave. Successful business development is built on cultivating positive connections and relationships. You could be their next client someday.
Yeah, I understand the anxiety, just wanted you to consider the possibility. They’d be pretty shitty to out you to the whole firm, and also similarly shitty for your potential new firm to revoke. I’ve never heard of this and wouldn’t want you to miss out on an opportunity because you couldn’t provide references.
Colleagues that have left the firm? Supervisors from your law clerk days?
Unfortunately, no one that I’ve worked with consistently has left the firm. I am going to reach out to the supervisor I had for an externship in law school…hopefully she still remembers who I am 6 years later. Haha
Is there anyone slightly above you in rank that can attest to your skills? I used colleagues that are 2-3 years ahead of me. It’s a risk because you’re revealing a confidence that could cause problems for you in your current position but if you’re able to reciprocate down the line they may be willing to assist.
