Maybe it’s you.
The environment/culture may be toxic regardless of whether some people/profiles actually succeed in it. After I left big law, and started having open conversations with former colleagues, we all realized how toxic it all was.
It’s good to have contrast and to work on yourself, otherwise you may end-up being gaslighted by some megalomaniac, unprincipled narcissist. I suggest you try to pin point what makes the place toxic: what are the dynamics and why are they problematic to you? What are the firm’s values? What do they reward? what type of people advance or get promoted? Are they fair/good managers? Do they give a shit about your growth or just your dignity/well-being? If the firm culture is not aligned with your values, perhaps you could seek into becoming a consultant or lateral into in-house/intl org/academia. Good luck!
What made the firms toxic?

What size firms and practice area? It may be that the business model is simply not a good fit (the Biglaw business model is not great for most but many of us are delusional).
I like my firm. I was at two big firms, now at a small firm. I’m the only FT attorney working for the owner. He sits in the office with the operations manager and a legal assistant. Paralegals, me, other support staff and marketing are remote. The firm is clear on compensation and bonuses. I also like the owner a lot and the rest of the team. I think it’s important to like who you work with. I also prefer being remote.
It’s the profession.
I work at a mid-size firm in the area doing GL defense work. The work is obviously pretty much the same as it would be elsewhere but I like my current firm better than the prior shops I've been at. Comparable pay to elsewhere with more attainable bonuses, no bait-and-switch about billable expectations, reasonable billable expectations, good team, lots of non-billable/leadership opportunities, supportive office and firm management, etc.
For me, it’s really about the work that I’m doing and people I am trying to help. When it comes to the firm and even other colleagues I work with, including those who may be of counsel on a case, there are times when I have to tune out “the noise”/“drama” and focus on the case work.
Yes, the firm environment matters, but I keep saying in other posts that you have to enjoy your job; the responsibilities connected with client representation. For me, that includes advocacy in and outside of the courtroom. If I do not enjoy the ins and outs of client advocacy, not even the best law firm environment would keep me in law.
That’s one reason why I asked: what made the firms toxic? Are you enjoying the practice of law and if not, why?
Sometimes the passive-aggressive or low key dismissive environment may have a negative impact on your mental health and overall well-being. Not everyone has the skills to remove themselves from the drama stemming for office politics.
It might just be the practice of law working at most firms nowadays. It’s just the system. Maybe that’s why so many attorneys are starting their own solos. Myself included. I rather make half what I have been making at a mid sized firm and be my own boss and for many other reasons.
Which firm and practice area? Or could it be partners?
