Possibly. Depends on how much they value you and/or how desperate they are to keep talent (eg are there lots of other open positions at the agency they are trying to fill). But always be prepared to accept the other offer as they may also tell you to take a hike.
Yes but you have to be ready to leave if they don’t counter.
Yes- unless they don’t counter and you have to choose between staying somewhere where they know you want to make more money and might leave or actually leaving
Thx it’s a good point!
Ya you can but you will be the first in line to be let go. Theres a target on your back once you make that manoeuvre and thats why its usually advised to not accept counter offer.
Rising Star
Maybe if someone else told your boss you had a sweet offer. In my experience, once you do this, there’s a target on your back.
If your only motive is salary and you’re happy in your current agency/role, I wouldn’t. Take the long road and try to work through the politics.
You have a HUGE target on your back if you accept the counter. You will be the first to get let go if layoffs happen. You’ll be viewed as if your heart isn’t in it. Not good from an optics perspective.
As cheesy as this is, it’s true that money doesn’t buy happiness. Sure, you can make more, but you might be miserable in your new role.
My advice… if you’re happy, stay and work towards getting the compensation you feel that you deserve. If you aren’t, leave. But know the grass isn’t always greener.
If someone is looking at other jobs and interviewing then they probably don’t want to stay. The employee would really have to be a rockstar for me to counter.
It’s one thing to go to your boss and say “I’m bring paid below market wages, I enjoy working here but I need to get paid more. I know X, Y, and Z agencies are hiring at $$. Can we please discuss my salary?” It’s completely different to say you already have another job offer and are going to take it unless they give you more money. An employee that’s looking to leave will eventually leave anyway.
I’m on the fence about this perspective. I agree that looking means you’re not 100% in, but on the other hand feeling underpaid may be the reason for that. In my experience, agencies respond with action more to “I have another offer” than they do to “I could get another offer.”
Yes but be ready for them to call your bluff.
