Possible to retool to litigation as a transactional midlevel? Understand it would involve a substantial class year cut.

As long as there’s demand for the role you’re eyeing, and you’re willing to take whatever class year cut is necessary to get you there, just about anything is possible. I’ve seen senior litigation associates retool to funds, midlevel m&a associates retool to L&E, etc.

like

Yes but why?

OP, came to make a similar point as T1 - the more senior you get, the more project management being a major part of the job becomes inevitable- whether you’re doing litigation or transactional. Maybe certain niche/specialist groups are different.

Yes, just not through a recruiter (outside of unique circumstances)

Anyone experience emotional burnout on this job? I’m physically fine - not particularly overworked, getting enough sleep etc. But I get overwhelmed having to code-switch as a junior to cater to the different working styles and personalities of all my different seniors and clients. I feel emotionally drained and anxious feeling like I have so many bosses to “please.”

Would love to hear thoughts on best approach of you are a senior associate at V10 firm. Do you just become counsel until they tell you that partnership is not in the cards or do you try to hop to the first partnership (equity, or at least NEP with clear progression to equity if you bring in some business) opportunity at a say V50 firm. I’m not home grown at my current firm, but do have a small book currently.

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.
