Publicis has apparently dismissed around 100 employees for not meeting the RTO policy which is currently a mandatory 3 days in office schedule. The dismissal was apparently for individuals who had not come in for 25 days this year. Thoughts on this?https://www.prweek.com/article/1893561/publicis-media-dismisses-dozens-us-employees-egregious-rto-policy-violations

As long as the work was getting done I dont know why we should care. COVID changed the work world not sure why we are trying to force the "old ways" on people who are more comfortable working remotely.

like

I agree that COVID showed that work can be done differently and agree that as long as the work gets done there should be more flexibility in how people can work. However with the way most companies operate where it’s really a dictatorship from upper management, defying policies set in place will inevitably lead to consequences. It would be nice if there could be a better way for all workers to have a say in the decisions

like

There were consequences for not showing up for work? Wow, unbelievable. What's this world coming to? Seriously, if you're working for a place and they tell you to show up, it doesn't seem that confusing.

likesmartfunny

Fair. I think it’s one thing to complain about the rule for RTO but actively defying the policy set in place inevitably will draw consequences especially if the policy being introduced isn’t violating any labor laws

I think it is fair. It seems crazy to me when people think they have the power to ignore rules without ramifications. Also it says that people who had remote before the pandemic, were able to keep it. That’s the way it should be.

likesmart

I think it is fair for the most part but it does suck that as a worker you don’t really have a say and it’s also down to when you got hired (i.e. if you happened to get hired as remote during covid you get to keep being remote whereas if you’re someone with greater tenure you have to strictly follow the RTO policy). Feel like there should be some sort of middle ground

like

But, if half your team is fully remote then doesn't this seem awfully unfair? I mean fir us Epsilon folks, our last Epsilon one call had a very serious tone with HR pressing the we need you in the office speech, yet a lot of us are all over the country working fully remote and getting work done just fine...crazy isn't it?

like

Yea it is a bit unfair in that sense if you happened to be hired on as a remote worker and get to basically not suffer any of the repercussions whereas if someone who was hired on before has to follow the RTO policy and both individuals are performing well

Clearly these people could have operated remotely per precedent. Whether it was soft layoffs, tax implications for the building, or whatever other greedy reason … I’ll give benefit of the doubt that corporate is in the wrong. Yes, (100) employees ignored the rules. The rules were asinine. If you disagree then enjoy your management koolaid.

like

I’m also usually one to blame the corporation and giving benefit of the doubt to the workers especially since they’re usually the one with less power in the dynamic. I feel like the company can definitely be losing out on good talent if they’re just letting go based on this and feel like it could’ve been better for everyone if the workforce had more of a say in what the RTO policy looked like

I think it’s fair. If they were told they have to come in, they have to!

like

Yea I guess it’s fair for the most part but others brought up a good point that if you basically were lucky enough to be hired on during the time of COVID as remote you can basically bypass the RTO policy which is where some of the unfairness comes into play especially if individuals are performing at the same level but the only difference is the person that HAS to go into office isn’t meeting that requirement

like

I hadnt heard this, that is unreal

like

Yea there’s some nuance here and I tend to always side more with the workforce than the corporation. Wish the workforce had more of a say in determining what their RTO would look like

I still think if companies were honest and more forthright about why they're pushing RTO, they would get better buy-in from employees.

like

That’s true or if they actually involved employees in the decision that would also help with buy in but it’s always hard to get acceptance when you’re forcing a rule down

The RTO mandates could be more understanding of the additional costs and the real adjustments employees will have to take on and compensate employees for this. The RTO mandate is about more then having employees return to the office. It is in large part the government and corporations deciding to get people back to the office supporting contined need for commercial real estate, and to support businesses such as restaurants, and retail businesses that have lost business as a result of changes to work from home. Overall employees returning to the office will cover the increased costs for travel and other expenses to go into the office. I certainly understand why employees are upset about this.

That’s a fair assessment. There’s certainly a lot of variables that contribute to Still feel like there’s probably a better way to meet in a middle ground where people aren’t flat out just ignoring the policy

Ok back on the healthy train after a couple weeks of being "off." Coworkers bad eating habits were starting to rub off onto me. Sadly realizing I cannot eat with them as a vegetarian if the only thing I can get is a salad or veggie burger. Getting my groceries tomorrow and avoiding the underwhelming food options in this honky town. So hard to force myself to do this but can't slip. Thank you for listening. 🙏🏻❤️🐠

My company contracts a web developer, we have a set amount of hours for the quarter and pay over if more work is needed.
