Random question: As an insurance underwriter for an insurance carrier (professional lines), how often is a normal marketing cadence for broker visits and vc/dial outs for non-field underwriters? My job recently instituted a minimum expectation of 10 dial outs a week, a VC meeting each week and monthly out of state travel to multiple offices, is this normal? This is on top of going to major conferences and balancing a $1.5-2M premium New business goal.

Monthly out of state travel ?? I’m not in PL but this sounds excessive

helpful

At Chubb PL lines are smaller departments so there is less people in the field so not as much travel

That sounds aggressive.

As a commercial agent who also meets with my carrier reps, and on occasion underwriters, that amount seems a bit excessive unless you have alot of agents you work with. I barely have time to meet once a quarter with them. I like getting emails that remind me of the different products and industries offered monthly. A call is always better over email but a call weekly would irritate me. I'd feel like it was more of an interruption than a help for me to place business UNLESS it was useful to the class of business i wrote often. Agents are your customers. If you have any that you work well with and ask them if they were cool with you calling them regularly to meet your quota, it may be a simple fix. This industry runs on relationships. So maybe the extra calls will help build those. Just saying, I will work with the uw that is easiest and quickest to work with over others in many cases because I like them and know if I needed them on something, they'd help.

Big firm. You’d know the name.

In my organization, most with my role are commission based. I make a set salary due to the firm I work for as an account manager/ coordinator for clients… I coordinate their enrollments, working with each groups HR department as to benefits and payroll purposes, and schedule our benefit counselors accordingly. I am finding that in most cases where I compare the voluntary benefits industry, I might be underpaid. What is an appropriate base salary for a position in which commission is replaced?
