Realized recently that there are zero female equity partners in my practice group with kids (there are two female associates and one or two income partners with kids). Virtually every single male equity partner has kids. So depressing.

Is it?

The law firm model rewards people who bill the most and generate the most business.

It’s OK if women with children don’t want to do the most of any of those things.

Personally, in my family, we don’t think men with children should be spending their time doing the most at work either. The dad in our family works part time, is room parent, coaches 2 sports teams etc.

IMO, most of parents’ time and effort should be focused on raising their kids, especially while they’re young.

But I don’t begrudge those high performers at work. They work hard and deserve compensation and all the law firm glory.

The critical piece is making sure there’s plenty of room for the part timers and the talented folks who want a seat at the table while limiting their time at work. We should be building up the respect afforded to the income partners, counsel, etc because they’re good at what they do, even if they do it for 6 hours a day instead of 11.

A1- I’m guessing you don’t have kids. You’ll understand all of this more when and if you do.

There are roughly 20 years of time when kids really need most of their parents’ time and energy. This has nothing to do with gender norms. We have approaching zero traditional gender roles in my house. It’s all just about really important caregiving and homemaking work that needs to be done, and making sure we have time to do it.

Parents can’t be in 2 places at the same time, and 1800, 2000+ hours at a law firm are most of a person’s time. You can absolutely still be a lawyer and have an important job, but I just don’t think really good involved patents can also be partners at law firm.

Women have a harder time ignoring their kids lol. Some of our most important partners are moms. But they're very serious about work.

What is CAF initiate process during recruitment?

My parents are visiting this week and mom and I made dinner tonight. Salmon is seasoned with Trader Joe’s ajika (a Georgian spice blend) and we just roasted the broccoli. The standout is the mejadara. It’s spiced rice and lentils with fried onions and is popular throughout the Middle East. We used the recipe from Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi’s cookbook, Jerusalem.
