Recently, my entire team was laid off, and only one other product designer and I remain. I unexpectedly became this person’s manager, and this is my first time in a managerial role. We are now approaching the next performance review cycle, and my direct report wants to be promoted. Any tips on how I can make this process as successful as possible? I know the final decision comes from above, but I really want to help make it happen!

I’ve been there too! For me, preparation is key. I assume you’ve already had an open conversation about expectations, and if you believe this person is ready for a promotion, great, that means you’re aligned.

Next, gather as much data as possible to support the case. Have you worked closely with them and seen their impact firsthand? Sometimes, colleagues know better than managers what others are actually doing (and since you were colleagues before, you might have unique insights?).

Finally, understand what decision-makers prioritize in promotions and tailor your case accordingly. Good luck!

If there is a promotion available then help advocate for their promotion and convey their strengths, potential, and loyalty to whomever is in the decision making role.
