When in doubt always ask your judge.
When I clerked, it was fair game if the opinion was public record and represented your unedited work. If you really want to be safe, just ask your judge for permission.

Lol it absolutely is a thing. Both my district judge and my circuit judge allow the use of ops as writing samples. Likely that they’ll require redaction though. Just ask your judge’s preference.
Completely depends on the judge. My COA judge point blank did not allow use of opinions as writing samples. Just ask.
It worked for me. The judge that I clerked for really pushed it to me, and they pulled out opinions that I worked on that they suggested I send as samples. You need their permission first, and some judges don’t want to see opinions as writing samples.
