I've never heard of a consulting firm that hasn't had utilization as part of the bonus calc lol. It's valid
I'll say if you limit your search of consulting firms to those that don't use utilization as a metric for bonuses/raises and don't want any stress you're looking at a short list.
I wouldn't use that as a disqualifier.

You just need to dig into the specifics during the interview. Salesforce's is 1) 78% based on a 2) 40 hr week and 3) holidays are not excluded. 1 is low, but so is 2 (Big 4 is generally 45 hr week), and 3 is common but a negative. The end result is still a very attainable utilization with PTO and some bench time between projects.
The 2nd part is grilling the hiring manager on promos. Did they promote anyone at 100% util or was it all 125% tryhards? How much PTO did *they* take? What is their typical start and finish time each day? Does the firm monitor messaging available/idle (Slack/Teams/etc) obsessively? There is a lot more to culture and WLB than just the util goal.
Thank you! Those are great questions I’ll use to get more details in the interviews, because I really am not sure how it all works. Appreciate the help!
I'd be concerned about the same thing, so I'm curious to hear from others who have had personal experiences with this.
Most, if not all, consulting shops calculate bonus this way or at least have individual utilization as part of the bonus. Perficient has the bonus be entirely individual util, which sucks if they stick you on the bench for a while which has happened 2/4 bonuses I've been eligible for. Also, check how they calculate the bonus and how much vacation time that leaves you to work backwards to work/life balance.
