Should I be willing to take a pay cut to find a job or should I keep holding out for what I'm worth? I've been unemployed for a few weeks and have had two job offers but the first job offer was for $78,000 a year and the second was only for $75,000. I was earning $88,000 at my last job, should I really be expected to take such a large pay cut?

If I was in your situation, I would take one of the offers and then keep looking to see if I can find something else.

Unfortunately you have to compare to what you're currently earning, which is $0. So even $1 a year is better than that.

I would definitely choose to get paid while I kept looking for what I wanted

I agree with UBS 1. When I started my career, someone told me “finding a job is like finding a girlfriend, it’s always easier when you already have one.” Dude couldn’t have been more right.

Take the offer. It doesn’t look like the job market will be better anytime soon.

Well, how much longer can you go without a paycheck at all? It might be time to suck it up

I’m currently a 2nd year associate in commercial finance. I’ve realized I don’t enjoy a a strictly transactional practice. I enjoyed litigation matters as a summer (particularly the adversarial nature). Also, love talking and advising clients. I don’t want the litigation lifestyle and appreciate the in-house opportunities of transactional. Assuming that I could switch (or lateral), I’m thinking I may enjoy employment (and the ability to defend and train/advise). I appreciate any insight.

I do sales for a major engineering firm. Focused on new business and exploring new markets. Last year I was in the top 50% for order intake, and first in number of projects won along with number of new customers. I think this is extraordinary given the effort it takes to win new business.

For next year my goal increased by 2.5X, and less of what I bring in counts towards that target. I really enjoy my job but I will essentially be getting a large pay cut. Lost in what to do besides quit??
