Simpson Thacher bent the knee to Trump, and an associate the sent a firm wide email resigning and calling out Simpson Thacher's actions. King! Much Respect!

Dear Colleagues,

After considerable reflection, I have decided to resign from my position at Simpson Thacher. This is not a decision I make lightly. I have learned and grown more than I ever thought possible among some of the most brilliant attorneys I’ve had the privilege to know.

However, recent developments have given me serious pause. I cannot in good conscience remain at an institution that, in my view, has compromised core democratic principles by aligning itself with forces that threaten the rule of law.

I will be joining Sullivan & Cromwell, where I hope to continue my career in a setting more consistent with my values.

To those who supported me here, I am deeply grateful. I leave with both pride and regret.

Recent lateral (6ish months). On pace for 2000. Lawyer Couples:
I’m currently an associate (no kids) in a very busy corp group (think 50-60 billable weekly). My wife works significantly less (currently part time, 10-15, but hopefully will be full time soon). I find myself getting upset when asked to help with basic household things (trash, cooking etc.) when she’s been lounging around watching Netflix all day. Am I being reasonable or am I a misogynist? How do you deal with one person having significantly more free time than the other?

I’ve been unsustainably swamped for months. Partner said they wanted to add an additional, more senior associate to the team on one massive case that went from “stayed” to “on fire” in the span of a month. I said that sounded awesome and the thought of someone else having to take on some responsibilities was such a relief… so why do I feel competitive and threatened now that the senior associate has actually been added? 🙄

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

I’ve worked 14+ days every day in November except yesterday when I only logged 6 hours of work (billable plus non-billable) (were required to upload our time every night now). How long should I wait after hanging up with our CFO just now who called me to tell me I’m behind and slacking to update my resume?

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.
