Curious — do people consider billing 200ish hours a month a lot still or is that almost standard now?

Despite what people make it seem when they mention their 250 or 300 hour months. Over 200 is a tough month and doing that multiple months in a row is an intense workload.

likehelpful

If it’s every month for more than 2-3 months it’s a lot. But 1 or 2 months of 200+ hours is pretty normal at my firm.

like

What I used to think was high has become common. At least for me and my team, that doesn’t mean I want it to become standard. It just has been insanely busy for the past year.

like

It’s a lot, but it’s common :(

like

i feel like this depends on practice area too. it should be uncommon in my practice area unless i’m in trial, but there are other practice areas at my firm where it’s more common (though still not the norm necessarily)

like

It’s a lot, I’m shooting to not go over my firms 1900 min.

like

It’s pretty standard. Having most months around 200 makes up for the off slow one and/or vacation if you’re shooting for 2200ish, which is itself pretty standard.

If you’re curious above the law had a thing. Average billable week for senior attorneys is 53 hours, which strikes me as a little high but right ballpark. The average yearly numbers you see are usually brought down by the people working partial years or partners who bill a lot to BD for months at a time.

That said if you can get away with less, now is the time. Normally it’d scuttle you, but firms can’t part with associates right now.

Taking an informal survey how many firms (I) have the junior and midlevel summer associates plan the bulk of the summer events (lunches but also evening events) and (ii) count time spent on the summer program as qualified billable work (in that partners see how much you bill to it on your time sheet)?

Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the ax to drop? I'm a soon to be 2nd year corporate associate who has seen work completely dry up. My utilization held pretty steady around 50% immediately after shutdown, but August was below 15 billables with no appreciable work in the pipeline. Aside from letting people know I'm available and doing pro-bono/CLE, it's starting to feel like a serious "covidcation" leading to termination.

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

For anyone who is burnt out and looking to leave big law and go to a midsize, do your research. I was one of those people and I can tell you the grass is NOT greener on the other side. It’s a myth. In retrospect, I should’ve stayed and set better boundaries and not have taken this 35% pay cut.
