To come up with volumn of ideas. To concept and create.
Manage up, volume of ideas, work on your craft, be a sponge, stay positive.
Your first round try not to limit yourself, get all the ideas out even if they’re dumb. Let your brain dump everything it can.
If you can, take a bit of time to do something else, let the thoughts marinate. Comeback the next day with fresh eyes, keep the ones you like and nix the ones you don’t.
Step and repeat until your internal with your CD.
Expectation hasn’t changed
It’s funny. I texted my friend to ask if she posted this because we were having the exact same conversation last night. I don’t think the expectation has changed. I think a lot of agencies don’t have the infrastructure or quite frankly the desire to mentor junior talent. I’ve had interviews where the recruiter has straight up said the agency was not a great place for juniors. It might feel like the expectations have changed, but I really feel like agencies just need juniors to get to mid level faster because they don’t have the time or patience to train.
All true. Many CDs have to oversee teams while simultaneously being placed on projects where they’re expected to be working creatives. There’s little time for hand-holding. That said, some ad schools do a better job of preparing juniors than others. Eagerness to learn and a willingness to work hard are the keys. And for junior art directors specifically — please invest in your design and craft skills. The work needs to look good.
Literally the same as it always has been. I don’t want to perpetuate this industry’s toxic culture, but they better be willing to WORK in the sense that I want to see them raising their hand, snagging every brief they can get their hands on, not complaining if/when some extra work is involved, going the extra mile, being curious, open-minded, and willing to learn. I don’t care if their ideas are mostly bad. I want to see them trying anything and everything. I want to see them make mistakes and learn from them. I want to see them getting inspired by work that’s out there in the world and I want to hear their opinions about it. Mostly I just want to see them giving a crap and actively evolving month over month.
