If it’s quiet after 10pm it’s not a loud, happening area
Pick a quiet street (not a major through street or Ave) in a happening area.
Clarification question: are you directly above/adjacent to a bar/in an area most notable for young/party crowds? Friend of mine lived above a bar once, and only when the bar would close did he get his peace and quiet (3am). Then you’d have to deal with the sfx from leftover degens (loud/drunk) that left said bar. See if you can rent an Airbnb in the area you want for a better understanding of what to expect.
I’d pick the happening area because of my personality, but people are different.
From personal experience I've done both, I lived across the street from a gastropub (a but quieter than a bar) in a really fun area as well as living in a completely residential area. I hated the residential area because I felt isolated from people my age and it definitely wasn't as convenient to meet people outside of work. I will say the downsides of the more happening area is that it likely won't always be quiet after 10 and it could happen at the worst or weirdest times and I once had my car side swiped by a drunk driver. I now live in more of a mix and it's been a better balance
