So I work with a legal assistant and she has no idea what she is doing in regards to e discovery. The attorney is also not following the ESI order. I want to jump off the roof. It seems very crooked in what he is doing and it makes me look crazy because I end up fixing her stuff !

Share your knowledge, if the way the LA is doing things is not correct meet with her or email her examples on how it's done and why. She'll continue to do things wrong unless someone points it out and explains. With the attorney you can say I've been following the ESI order is this okay with you because I notice that it's being done X way. She probably doesn't know either.

Ouch!!! I have not had this happen and if I did I probably wouldn’t be eager to help someone else either.

Do your best and let ot be. At the end the attorney is responsible. If you think it will hurt the attorney or the client bring it to the attorneys attention with your concerns.

I agree with the comment above. I also have a legal assistant that is not very knowledgeable, in fact she was confirming all the parties in the case with plaintiffs counsel prior to my start, but when I saw this and other issues I definitely emailed her and let her know the correct way and why it is done that way. In the end my attorney thanked me.

Interesting I highly doubt these attorneys will thank me. They are pretty i knowledgeable themselves

Happens all the time. Especially for paralegals and legal assistants.

Additional Posts in Paralegals

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

I’ve been a paralegal for about 30 years in private law firmS. As I get older, I feel like it’s time for a semi-career change. Either an office manager position or perhaps a corporate position where I can travel a little since my kids are grown and I’m an empty-nester. Has anyone made this type of transition? Advise welcome. How do you know when it is time to move on. I am the only litigation paralegal billing over 2,500 a year consistently. Love the boss I work the most for but that person has grown distant. Staff reviews were supposed to be complete this week and no one has mentioned mine. Underpaid by about $30k per market value. Torn and confused.

For those of you who made the switch to in house/corporate law, what was your experience like? Did you have to take a lower position to gain the experience or were you able to argue that your soft skills were transferable to in house? I’ve been in litigation for 15 years and I’m looking to make the switch. Ultimately, I’d like to get into Legal Ops, but feel getting some in house experience first would be beneficial.

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? I’m not the decision maker, but it’s been a few weeks with very few applicants. I’m curious if there’s something hurting the firm in its search.

Are there any fully remote lawfirms, ie you don't have to live in the state they have offices? I recently left a large lawfirm to go in-house which came with a huge paycut that is not going to be sustainable long term, but needed a remote position to be able to move. I'd like to keep my current job part-time but get back in a lawfirm too.
