I’ve been in my position with the Federal Government for over six years. I have never received a grade increase for the time that I was there, yet all of my reviews have been favorable down to me being able to receive monetary bonuses. Just recently I asked my supervisor why I haven’t I received a grade increase, she said my title doesn’t call for one. Any suggestions on how I should handle this matter? Thanks.

Grade promotions aren't automatic. You need to search USAjobs and find a job at the next grade to apply to. At my agency, they do roster job postings at few times a year, then they pick someone from the roster when a new position opens up. Good luck.

Thing is I’ve been with the Fed’s for years. At other agencies I’ve always automatically got the grade after a years review. Others that work within my department have received grade increases AND WE DO pretty much the same duties, so it’s odd, that I get nothing because my title doesn’t call for it. Something isn’t right. Thanks for your suggestion.

I’ve only worked with government employees and contractors while in the army, but my brother-in-law and his wife are both in contractor roles. They can bump your Step every 6 months, but most roles only fall within 1-2 levels. You have to apply for positions to get level promotions, unless position is listed with a range of GS11-12 as example. If you come in at a GS11, you can be bumped up to a GS12 within your role with your next annual review after 12 months in role.

This isn’t a situation where one would have to apply for a new position. It’s the same job that has different tiers. One would remain under the same supervisor, keep their same desk they would just say “I’m _____ tier 3”.

Are you talking about a step increase? Or a grade increase? If your position is not a laddered position (9,11,12) then they cannot just “give” you a higher grade. That would require rewriting the position to be a higher grade which rarely RARELY does that happen. A step increase however is entirely different and can be awarded, typically every year for the first four years, then every two years after. For example, GS12 step 1, GS12 step 2 etc etc.

I spent 12 years as a GS and have never heard of “levels”. I would look at your position description and see what it states as the maximum grade is.

hiya fishes. happy friday! sorry if this isnt the right bowl, but this is in regards to vacation time. i have an interview process starting next week, and wondering when it would be good to mention i would be OOO between the middle of the month in september? its for a week. im unsure if i can twist this to have a start date once im back. going back and forth on being transparent vs. mentioning it later on. thoughts?

Hi all,

After the final interview, HR reached out and said they would like to extend an offer. HR gave a ball park of 135k - 145k base with about 15k in sign-on equity and 20k annual bonus.

After a couple of days, HR person came back with with 125k base and 20k annual bonus. No sign-on equity anymore. What should I do given that these numbers seem way lower than the initial range provided? HR claimed it’s because of “market conditions”.

I gave them a range of $70-75K, so they gave the max. But I am questioning asking for a bit more given insurance is apparently on the higher-end and I want to ensure I didn't low-ball myself.

Just to note, this is about a 25% increase compared to what I am currently making.
