So I’m interviewing staff for some open positions. I used to not call for references because it’s generally a pain and takes up so much time, but others have suggested I call at least 1 reference. What’s your take on calling references? I work at a small restaurant so it’s not like a big corporation.

Calling even one reference can be a game-changer. It doesn’t have to be a big time suck, just a quick chat to confirm reliability or attitude. I usually pick someone who’s worked closely with the candidate, like a former manager. It’s less about digging up dirt and more about getting a gut check before you commit. Saves headaches later and keeps the vibe right in a tight team.

I 100% base it off of my intuition and how the interview goes. I'm usually pretty good about judging someone's character and I think if you ask the right questions, you can get a pretty good sense of if they are a fit or not. If you're unsure, then that's when I would reach out for confirmation.

I agree, eye contact, hand gestures, answering appropriate questions correctly and in a communicable manner...

Yeah I definitely think it's an important step in the hiring process. I've found out some unsavory information about candidates before that I would have never known otherwise because their resume and interview skills were good, but then turns out they caused a ton of drama on the team at a previous job. I feel like in a restaurant environment it almost matters more because the quality of character affects someone's performance SO much. I'd call at least one, but even more if you can!

I used to skip references too, but after getting burned by a hire who talked a big game but couldn’t deliver, I started calling at least one. This one short call can give you peace of mind, especially if the reference shares little things about how they handled pressure or worked with others. I’ve had friends say it helped confirm gut feelings, which really matters in a tight-knit team.

Hi! I currently work in hospitality, mainly as a KP and front-of-house support, and I’m really passionate about building experience in restaurants with a strong team vibe. I totally agree that references say a lot about someone’s attitude and work ethic. I always try to give 100% in every shift, whether it’s back or front of house. If you’re hiring or looking to grow your team, I’d be happy to chat or send on my details. Always eager to learn and grow in this industry!

It could be a good idea but, job don't speak on a person ability or how they work, so I think you should get to know them

My name is Anita Sims and I'm very interested and I live in Baltimore Maryland

Where at?

Calling people with references is completely injustice for others, some of them are of totally different line, like doing business after +2 and pursuing job as a food service workers, on the other hand there are people with Masters degree in foods and nutrition ( specific line of foods) with the same position at work. Means that there is no value of your higher studies if the student with business studies working with those who have Specialization in foods and nutrition. isn't it funny

The flip side of the coin is that nobody would give a reference name that would talk bad, however, if it were me, I'd try to get an insight to the type of person the reference is, attitude, profanity, etc , because odds are is that the candidate has similar traits as the reference they gave.

I use to not either until after Covid but you almost have to because of turnover

I'm interested in joining your professional staff my name is Anita I live in Baltimore

Always call past employers and references. People lie.

I supervised for a period of time and i would highly suggest calling at least one reference, I came across so many people that lied on their resumes. Just recently actually I was working in an outlet with someone that was supposed to be a server and I guess told management they also had bar experience, well I watched them scoop ice with a collins glass and put a martini in a rocks glass (: and they definitely had never served a day in their life either and they also stole money from me :D which we found out later was a common occurrence at their other places of work LMAO

Is the MBB name really worth it over Big4, T2, Boutiques in terms of exit opps?

Would love to hear from experienced hires who have insight into both types of exits (MBB vs other) to better comp and wlb (tech is ideal but any industry works).

I know type of case work factors heavily into opportunities but how much does the MBB name really open? Is that name recognition worth leveling down to grind for another few years?

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

Sweaty post-workout question. If I finish a bike or run in the heat I am usually just pouring sweat for the next 15 or so mins. So I've gotten into the habit of just putting a towel or yoga mat down on the floor and laying/stretching until I am not going to throw sweat everywhere or step in to the shower and step out still sweating. Is there a better version of this maybe for recovery or even just not wasting time waiting?

So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?
