The best way to beat the algorithm is to insert 10-12 keywords from the job posting into your resume. That usually got me through when I was applying.
Use jobscan test out your keywords vs the post
Trick I heard years ago and used, instead of using just a few keywords, you can actually copy and paste the entire job post into your resume, make the font super small and turn it white so it is invisible against the white paper.
Yeah that’s some super spy level thinking!!
Best bet is to see if you’re connected with someone at that agency on LinkedIn. Then hit them up so they can pass along to HR/recruiter. Usually agencies have referral bonuses so a win-win for both parties if you get hired.
If you HAVE to use an online application, work important words from the job listing into your resume and cover letter.
Though, if you're a creative, your best bet is to not use the online application and network. Reach out to friends, old colleagues and friends of old colleagues.
Two job offers I've gotten happened by contacting someone who knew someone I worked with. Another was by contacting someone who had worked at the same agency I had worked at (though we didn't work there at the same time).
Online applications are a black hole for creatives, generally.
Exact same thing happened to me last year. Try and find a connection to someone in the company. I did. Emailed them. They looked into it. I ended up getting the job.
Linked in works. Now is a tough time to hire and the old system of “if you don’t see something that fits we would still like to see your resume” fishing on job boards is a relic. Seems like some of the places are starting to look for rehiring. Spend time looking around at the agencies, big people on LinkedIn and still submit through the portals. I agree with the above, you should copy the job description language, but my guess is a lot of the jobs have been frozen anyway. Good luck.
CD3, resistance is futile
You’re a creative - be creative. Forget applying online. Send an actual, physical letter to the person you’re interested in working for. Or put together some kind of interesting package of work that you can send via FedEx. Create a book about you and your work and print out a bunch of copies through Apple and send them to people you want to work for. Start a campaign on Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube about yourself. The point is, stand out. Be different. Be creative in selling yourself. Doing the same old stuff will result in zero responses, as you’re discovering. Do things that get talked about. That make people want to hire you instead of 6 juniors fresh out of Miami Ad School or The Creative Circus. Then you’ll have a chance.
Listened to this yesterday. https://overshare.simplecast.com/episodes/recruiter-roundtable-with-wiedenkennedy-and-squarespace
Always reach out to a human. You know as much as anyone that half this job is fit & personality; no MarcelBot can gauge that
Bet they got canned too...
Think like a computer. You know the way we were taught in copywriting class or campaigns101.
Don't you mean "Campaigns101001110000100101"?
Take out your years at college ..eg BA College of William and Mary just leave out class of 1996 or something like that that can trigger your age...
lots of replies - & good to be aware of black hat algorithm busters if all else fails. but the first thing any self respecting creative would do is identify the cco at the agency they’re interested in and work enthusiastically brilliantly on an ongoing multi-media creative assignment to get that person to look at their digital portfolio.....
I too experience that.
The thing is most HR or recruiter receive 100 application. There might use some system to “crawl” the right ones. The called it the “ATS” system.
So when we apply a job, make sure right keywords is written within your CV.
