Hang in there and stay confident in who you are. This is a strange period and it will shift again eventually. You are not alone in this employment struggle. Once you are past it, you will be more resilient having gone through it. This is the exact time you need to be your own best friend!
Are you really leaning on your network? Connecting with your alma maters, business associates, professional organizations, friends?
I am honestly exhausted and have no hope in finding a decent job. I could go into my family business (would still pay less, but one day I’ll own it and make more money than I could in any other job) but I always saw that as a failure in life not being able to build a career for yourself. I feel like I am a failure for not finding a job and I’m feeling very lost right now. I am 28 with a bachelor, a master and 4 years of work experience + 1 year of stages/internships
Hi!
It certainly can be frustrating and difficult and slow… to find a job in today’s market. The fact that you havent found the job yet(!) doesnt make you a failure :)
Think about what has been working so far? How did you get those interviews? What hasnt been working that well and what are some things you can tweak?
Anyone that comes to your mind from your already existing network that could help? Or anyone who might know someone?…
Also, working in your family business - how could that be an amazing think now that you have gained 4 years of work experience? What ideas could you bring in? How could you help your family to make it even more successful? (If the business truly is interesting to you).
Happy to have a chat with you to learn more about your process so far and offer any additional insights, if you’d like. Feel free to message me/connect on LI.
Don’t take it personally, it’s tough for everybody right now. I’m in the same situation (high salary history) and can’t find a job or even a freelance gig. I tell myself it’s out of my control and there’s not much I can do but keep applying. You need to be resilient. If you need some support, DM me ☺️
Years ago, I did the move to a lower job and “worked” my way up. It is a hard hit to the ego. But it doesn’t mean that you “stop” at that low paying job. I think of it like a lateral move (even though it isn’t that lateral).
If the priority is to move home, you can always work at the home business and then look for local roles.
Also, one of the ways I built my way back up was by picking up contract jobs. Have you spoken with any local to the family contracting jobs?
Focus on your priority 1. Then you can find that next step up.
You may need to take a lower paying position and work your way up. Asking for a huge salary right out of the gate is unrealistic. Also, staying in a position you are unhappy with for too long will create it's own problems. continued salary increases will eventually price you out of the market if you want to change jobs and expect the same salary. My advice is to find a great company to work for where you have the chance for advancement, take the lower paying position, then go in and shine. Show them your worth. The higher salary will come. It's what I did and it worked.
