Super niche question, but has anyone transitioned from BL to become a law school career advisor? Curious on how to make this move if anyone has advice.

I recall some of my law school career advisors had law firm backgrounds.

I would ask your law school advisor this very question, and ask if they can refer you to other law school advisors who have this background.

I have seen part time roles advertised. I imagine you can start in a temp or part-time role and get hired full-time later.

I knew an associate who did that around 4th year or so. She did not end up loving it and stayed about 2 years before transitioning to an in house legal role, where she's been happy since.

My friend did and she basically got the job bc she knew the dean of career development and expressed interest in a position directly to the dean. If you know people in that office at your school, you should reach out and ask, provided you have a good relationship and trust them to not go run and tell, so to speak. Otherwise just keep an eye out for job postings from whatever school you’re interested in.

Depending on your level and experience - it could be more lucrative to provide paid career advising services outside of a school setting like on a consulting basis. There are likely companies providing this service that may pay more than a school would or you could independently consult.

How bad is the pay cut for this kind of move? Do career advisors even clear 6 figures? It seems like rewarding work but I worry I couldn’t pay the mortgage.

These jobs are 70k jobs at best. Maybe if you stick around long enough and become a dean or director you may hit the low six figures but that would involve the right institution, years of service, and of course a little bit of luck.

Boutique I have been eyeing has billable hour requirement of 1500-1600 and comes with a 20-25% paycut. Is this a stupid idea and should I grind it out until I can move in house? Q’s for hiring partners and recruiters - you know that most associates quit their managing attorneys and not the firm/case. I’m in that boat. What do I say to a prospective employer about the situation of why I want to jump ship?

Very brief background - I’m a senior associate who has been on one complex commercial litigation case for over a year. Over time, the relationships between attorneys on the case have deteriorated to the point that it is affecting my productivity/work. I want out.
