Supply chain strategy work (design, transformation) versus implementation? What firms have the strongest practices for each?

PWC1, that depends. Whats your current profile? Do you have any existing sc experience? I mean Lean/Six Sigma is a good start for process improvement. ISM or APICS certifications are always good to help you optimize different aspects of the supply chain.

In terms of technology, the biggest players are your classic SAP, JDA and Oracle for all inclusive solutions. You want to look at the PLM, WMD, TMS, and Distribution modules. If you want to be really technical you should overall learn one or two of those. I dont know if there is much value on certifying on those ERPs but knowing how they work will give you an edge.

And then there are the advanced analytics platforms and control towers. Things like GT Nexus or Aurora. Not a lot of companies are ready for them these days but they certainly give an edge to those who use them.

There is a whole range of options overall. Like everything it depends on what your goals are and if you want to focus on something or be a generalist.

Accenture has a strong SCM Enablement Suite ( in short what they Design , they build and deliver ) . Deloitte has similar / strong capabilities . The others are just all talk and no action .

smart

Can’t speak to others but we’re pretty deep, I’ve spent 8 yrs doing supply chain strategy/transformation work. Love the people I work with.

@D1. What are the tools I should be looking at to get certified in to increase my tech acumen? Associate here. So forgive me for such a vague adk

I work SC, love the work. Everything I do is 'soup to nuts'. Start with assessment, business case and strategy. Conceptual design for processes, organization, and tech architecture. Then we move to process improvement, solution implementation and hyper-care as needed. Usually we compete with Deloitte for this kind of work as E1 mentioned.

@A1 would you be able to advice me on the tools I should be looking to get good at or certifications to acquire? Any tips to build the profile to be able to make a transition in next 12 months, I would really appreciate that.

At A1. Thank you so very much for a very detailed response. I am currently in financial consulting wanting pivot to supply chain. This has been one of the most comprehensive responses I have received thus far. I really appreciate it. Are you based out of NY by any chance? Or would you be willing to connect via phone? I would like to research more on the areas mentioned in your comment and hopefully connect with you further clarity and guidance. It’s a long shot but I would be extremely grateful if I can connect with you. My burner is safish2018@pwc.com

I think the big guys lack strategy. Maybe good at implementation but would not rely on them on operations strategy. I would target ATK or McKinsey for operations strategy.

I currently do planning system implementation at SC level. Quite technical stuff and less PMO. What are my future career possibilities from here onwards? Can I keep progressing in the standard ladder and keep doing implementations, or is it automatically going to end up becoming more are more sales oriented and less actual implementation work? Especially interested in the SM level and above. I’d prefer staying at Big 4 and avoid the supplier side.
