Depends on what the differential is between the 20% they’re offering you (plus the market rate of filling your old jobs vacancy) and the market rate they’d pay a new employee for the role you applied for. You don’t know what the current market premium for your current role is. They might have to pay a 30% increase from your current salary to your replacement and then 20% to you to move. Versus 35% to an external hire for the new role you want. I’d say take the 20%, get a year or so’s experience in the role you’re interested in. Then shop around in the market and leave for another 20-40%. Or you can stay where you are. Up to you. It does not typically pay to be loyal in this market anymore. Maybe if you stay at a company for 10-20 years it could pay off. But that’s a big gamble. Most people take what they can get in the market every 2-5 years.

Yes. Take the job and interview outside for better role. Its awful that an internal candidate has to go thru’ 5 rounds of torture and not give what you want. On the other hand it seems like they may have other candidates at cheaper price point. Also, if you believe you are more qualified you will not stop interviewing. Power to all qualified folks:)

Got a really substantial (~40%) mid year raise after I brought in a basically unsolicited competing offer from one of our peers. My firm typically only adjusts salary on an annual basis in March, and I’m pretty worried I’ll see a smaller than normal annual raise this spring to “make up for” my out of sequence mid year raise. Any advice on advocating for myself to ensure that doesn’t happen?

2YoE at Tier 2 FS practice, considering a switch to commercial law. Any thoughts on the long-term TC trajectory at MBB/Tier 2 consulting vs Magic circle law? Also on the stability of the respective careers? I have this perception that even if I don’t survive Commercial law, at least I can move to Swindon or Milton Keynes and retrain as a high street solicitor doing divorce filings making £50k for the rest of my career. Exit opportunity for consultants seems to be pretty bleak in UK.

Does your firm give out raises when you get promoted? Just found out mine only gives out raises as part of the annual appraisal process. So if you get promoted in Jan, you won’t get a raise until Oct.

I’m interviewing for a role that is open to both remote and in-person (when it’s safe) work. Should I give salary expectations based on cost of living in the city where the office is located or based on where I’d live working remotely? Cost of living in the office location is a lot higher than where I’d live but since they are also considering in-person candidates, I know the budget is there.
