I don't know if you've ever worked in a restaurant, but let me tell you about server dreams. You literally go to sleep to rest but have the most obnoxious dream about being in the weeds, quadruple sat, customers losing it, and you're the only one waiting tables. You literally wake up more exhausted than when you went to sleep.

Omg, I’ve totally heard of server dreams, and they sound SO stressful! It’s like you can’t even catch a break in your sleep!
I feel this so much.. my body leaves, but my brain’s still checking sale racks in my head. What’s helped me is a shutdown routine: I jot down loose ends, do my closing tasks, and physically leave the building and try to leave behind the stress with it. I'm just trying to signal to my brain that work is done, even if it takes practice.
Chief
That’s such a great approach! Thanks for sharing your routine, it’s a great reminder to not carry the stress home!
100%. I wish I could banish work from my mind the second I clock out, but it just does not work like that. I feel like as soon as I'm done for the day I'm already starting to stress about everything that I'll have to do the following day. The only time I truly feel relaxed after and disconnected from work is when I go on vacation.

Ugh, I get that so much. It’s like work lingers in your head even after the shift ends.
Yep! feel this all the time, like you at home watching tv but your minds still stressing and waiting for the next rush, or wondering if you did this, or forgot to do tat, or replaying a tense moment with a customer.....:(
Chief
Yesss, that’s exactly it! You’re trying to unwind, but your brain’s replaying every little moment like it’s still on shift. It’s exhausting.
lol when I clock off (I WFH so it’s even more triggering for me — I can just log back on any time and fix something if I so choose) I allow myself ONE THOUGHT about work, and after that I consciously turn it off. Another thought about work? Defer it to tomorrow morning @8am. I’ve gone through a lot in this life and I’ve learned nothing other than the people that you love are worth stressing over. Truly.
Chief
That’s such a healthy boundary you’ve set. It’s tough when work is literally in the next room, but I love that you’ve learned to put it down and prioritize the people and moments that truly matter. That mindset is gold. 🌟
Agreed. If you have someone crazy over the phone that too on the last call, it stays with you until next day. Thats why i guess day-offs are important to take your mind off of work.
Chief
Right? It’s like you hang up but your brain refuses to hang up with you. Those are the times you just need to take a proper break and hit reset.
I know I need a break when I start having those "work dreams"
Chief
Exactly! The second you start dreaming about work, it’s the clearest sign that you need to take a real step back.
