There’s a job I want to apply for. The range is $81,795-$112,350. This got me thinking.. Those are pretty specific numbers. When you’re negotiating salary, is it weird to ask for a specific number like $98,650 instead of rounding to $100k?

Does being that precise help or hurt in negotiations? Curious how others approach this.

Be careful when relying on a specific range. Where did those numbers come from, the company itself, Indeed, GlassDoor, etc.. How do you justify your own request: is it based on your past salary and experience, or a salary range for the job description such as from Indeed, GlassDoor, etc.? Unless you're trying to sell a car, I would just ask for 98 or 99K.

like

The range is listed in the job posting.

I usually don’t go that specific and keep it at whole numbers. The numbers they post are calculated by market data so hence, it’s not always rounded.

I also wouldn’t just give them a number. Ask them if they can narrow that range down a bit. And ask what kind of candidate are they looking for? Are they looking for newly experienced or entry level, which would be closer to the beginning of that range? Or do they want more experienced, which would be closer to the top of the range. And then do your own research and find out what other companies are paying for that same job in that area. And make sure this company is competing in line with that. And then come up with a number you feel best matches the skills and experience you bring to the table.

You can ask all these open ended questions when they decide to extend an offer and then you can negotiate from there

Have you seen other locations that carry that same information as far as the salary band? Usually companies will list in more than one place and I have not seen an occasion where the salary band is different on different platforms. I will go see if you can find it listed someplace else and then if it looks the same across all platforms put that as your salary range but ONLY if it is listed as a required field on your application, if not, I would leave it blank.

like

Do your homework on the role and find out what the salary bands are in your area and for other companies if possible. Don’t forget experience and schooling does also play into that salary band. Read exactly what the job role states, is it 3 to 5 years experience or 2 to 3 years with a bachelors? Are there certifications that are needed? What other types of tasks will you be doing in the role? Do your homework come up with a band and then don’t give a number first. Ever.

If you’re happy with the range just say it fits your expectations and if the opportunity seems like a good fit, you’re happy to assess the full offer package at the offer stage. This way they’re not grounding you during the interview process. If you lean towards the low end in the beginning and do well, they could see you as a bargain. If you anchor yourself to the top of the range from the beginning, they’ll look for any reason to cut you out.

like

I wouldn't go that specific either. It is better to have the range and ask for the higher end of the range.
