Work life balance, 💯. I want to have experiences, not spend 12 hrs a day working. The extra money isn't worth the added stress.
Why do you work in consulting if you think that way?

The line is where ever you draw it. The saying us more about making tough choices. Do I party in college or make good grades, do I work hard at my job or do I do the minimum and phone it in, do max my retirement savings or get a new car. It often is do I work long hours in my 20s/early 30s, to maximize income and save, but not always. Life us about trade offs, but they are not the stark black or white you are proposing.

Higher earnings should get invested in better personal life. Few years in IB can get you in a much stronger financial position and then you can jump on to a better WLB job.
So it’s not really two distinct options you have listed.
But when do you jump into the WLB option? in your 40s? some might argue that it would be losing your best years
Would argue that the “easy life” isn’t the 9-5. Some might even call that the hard life.
The easy life is reckless spending doing whatever you want, mounting debt, with little to no income.
That’s what leads to a hard life later.
A 9-5 just sounds like a life. There are downsides and upsides
4-5 years in consulting or another high pressure, high pay industry and then an exit to something more chill seems like a good compromise. Just make sure to get out before you have any serious health effects.
Did 4 years in consulting before an exit to pharma. The years in consulting were also valuable for the work ethic and efficiency learned.
Some people do both. I think this statement better makes sense for doing IB or Mgmt Consulting first, then industry 9-5s after. The money, skills, and others things you get from the former will help you out in the latter
