Thinking of relocating for a better-paying government position in another state. I’m an analyst in Texas making $55K, and while the cost of living here isn’t terrible, I wonder if I’m leaving money on the table. I’ve seen similar roles in California or D.C. offering $70K–$85K, but then there’s the higher cost of living. Has anyone made a move for better pay? Was the jump worth it, or did the expenses cancel out the raise? Would love to hear what salaries look like in other states and whether relocating actually improved your financial situation!

85 in DC is a little rough if you’re not going to get a cost of living adjustment.

I relocated for a higher-paying job, and while the salary jump was great, the cost of living in CA definitely ate into that increase. It can still be worth it if the career opportunities and lifestyle improvements are there. Have you looked into the overall benefits, like work-life balance or job stability?

Don’t forget you will paying State income tax and depending where you are working in Cali or DC there is also City income tax.

I would have to want to relocate for other reasons first, unless the pay bump was going to be astronomical. 15k to 30k extra is nothing to scoff at, but the cost of moving and probably raises in prices, I feel at best will most of the time even out. Would absolutely have to crunch the numbers. That’s why I would probably need another reason first, i.e. better weather, location, etc.

I considered relocating for better pay, but when I crunched the numbers, the cost-of-living increase wiped out the raise. A $75K salary in D.C. wasn’t worth more than my $58K salary in Florida. If you’re thinking of moving, use a cost-of-living calculator to compare net income after taxes, rent, and other expenses. Some states pay more but take more. That said, if the move gives you better career growth, it might still be worth it long-term.

For policy impact questions, use real examples. Talk about how a policy affected funding, service delivery, or efficiency. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answer. If you're unsure, bring it back to data-driven decision-making and stakeholder impact. A strong answer should show you understand how policies influence budgets, outcomes, and the people they serve.

I'm in the final round of interviews for two internal positions - both vertical. One has FTE's (my first such experience) and the other a much broader scope vs my current role

I had interviewed externally for a role on par w the internal roles, at a smaller and less established company. They confirmed +20% was in their range

How do I push back on my company if they offer less than that, if I do want one of those roles? Without a pay scale, what is the best way to approach?
