No. That’s not an art director. That’s a super-lazy graphic designer who clearly just wants to be a pair of hands.

He/she should be thrown into a design studio. Not a creative dept.

Any chance you can talk to your CD about teaming you w/ a legit AD?

I think it’s important to understand as a writer that the nature of writing means you have to understand and explain the mechanics of ideas. Which means you get better at them.

Art directors don’t do that, so it can be very easy for them to fall back on visuals.

My advice is to move forward knowing that you are a better ideas person. And probe a little bit (in a kind way, of course) about what they’re getting at with the visuals. There’s probably something they’re trying to get at, they just don’t know how to explain it.

I think this sounds like a young art director, and everyone grows at their own pace.

And I don’t think we need to rule art directors out as bad when they’re junior or mid-level and struggling to express concepts. It comes with the territory.

I've been paired with some ADs people who ended up being lazy or unsure of their actual role. It sucks. You gotta work twice as hard

At the end of the day it's your career. Not a school group assignment where the motivated person does all the work. So find the right time to speak up. You owe it to yourself.

Once you find the right partner, hold on to them for dear life.

No. Do they just say no when you ask them to help?

Concepting is half of their job, so they need to either get with the program or get out.

like

Good luck in your future endeavors.

We normally don’t work together so trying to figure out how to on this project, but when I ask for help they basically come with visual devices - not ideas.

When you meet with a partner for a new assignment. Do you bill for that time? I’m a new associate, so I don’t know. On the one side it seems that meeting and conferring for an assignment requested by the the client would be billable since it’s using firm time and resources. On the other side, we are just talking about how to tackle the assignment and not tackling the assignment itself.
